if you have an allergy to chloroprep would you also be allergic to betadine? after every surgery i break out in poison ivy type rash around site.

Accepted Answer

Not the same: Betadine is based on Iodine and Chloroprep is Chlorhexidine, a different chemical.  It is also possible that you are allergic to tape or latex which is used in bandaging the surgical site.

can the irritant in poison ivy travel through the air? now that it is spring, i have been having a lot of issues with allergies because of all the pollen in the air. however, the other day i noticed after a sneezing fit that i was developing an itchy rash

The : The answer is yes, but only under circumstances like burning it. You may have come into contact with it thru other means like a pet or something else that came into contact with it, if it is really poison ivy. The rash should be seen by a medical person as it may not be poison ivy or any contact allergy.

Posin Ivy : Unlikely that poison ivy would cause a fever, ( temperature over 101.4 ).   Possibly a mild elevation, but not a fever.

Posion ivy : Poison ivy symptoms normally begin 12-48 hours after contact with the plant oils and can last 2-3 weeks!  Often the rash gets worse before it gets better. If the rash persists beyond 2-3 weeks or you develop oozing blisters, pus or fever see a Dr as the skin may  have become infected requiring antibiotics.

Histamine: Histamine and histamine like products are released from blood cells being exposed to chemicals of poison oak/ ivy. These chemicals cause irritation of nerve endings.

Poison : Poison ivy causes itching, and rash and sometimes blistering.  It should not cause actual muscle pain.

Postinflammatory: Skin can often turn light colored in areas where someone had an allergic reaction like poison ivy.  This is called "postinflammatory hypopigmentation".  This is usually not scarring and will resolve.
