i have wrist and elbow pain; is this carpal tunnel syndrome?

No: Carpal tunnel pain is usually an electrical shock or shooting pain in the hand from movement in the wrist.  One of the tests is to tap on the wrist to elicit the pain.  Elbow pain may be from a tendonitis or bursitis, for example.  Wrist pain can be from several causes too including strain.  However, one does not get elbow pain with carpal tunnel syndrome.

had open carpal tunnel surgery on my left wrist in 09/2014. as of late i have been having inner elbow pain and middle finger only pain. any ideas?

Hand surgeon: These symptoms could be due to a recurrence of some carpal tunnel problem. Your hand surgeon is best qualified to evaluate and advise you.

Pain in the arm: It does sound like a nerve pain given the distribution. Wonder if it may be related to the surgery you had. You should see the surgeon who did the surgery. May need a nerve conduction study.

?: As the term suggests, carpal tunnel syndrome would involve swelling around the wrist leading to the swelling of your hand. I am not sure what it is you are experiencing around your elbow. Perhaps it would be best if you speak to your doctor and let him advise you what needs to be done for you

Not even remotely : Carpal tunnel presents with wrist and hand pain, with numbness and tingling usually involving the ring, middle, and index fingers and thumb.  Most symptoms worse at night.  Tennis elbow presents with specific pain over the outside of the elbow, specifically induced by certain gripping or grasping movements.  Numbness is never part of tennis elbow.

Numbness/pain: Carpal tunnel syndrome is numbness of the fingers. Tennis elbow is pain at the elbow.

Could Be: It could be carpal tunnel syndrome, especially if the pain is localized to your thumb and index finger.  It also could be coming from the tendons at the elbow (aka tennis or golfer's elbow).  A good physical exam by a physician will help determine what is going on.

Compensatory pain: It is not uncommon to adopt compensatory postures in response to one injury that cause excessive stress on another joint. See a physical therapist for proper body mechanics and splints. If this does not resolve you may need further evaluation.

had carpal release surgery.  but now my pinky up to my elbow is extremely painful. did carpal tunnel surgery not help? why am i still in pain?

Accepted Answer

Elbow to pinky pain: You may have a problem with a different nerve that does not involve the carpal tunnel. The carpal tunnel is in the wrist area. You have to be seen and might need additional testing including the elbow region.
