Not simple: Cancer is ultimately a genetic disease, that is cancer cells have mutations not found in normal cells.  Some mutations are in genes affecting metabolic pathways, including glutamate metabolism, and the abnormal metabolism may contribute to the progression to invasive cancer. So your question is sort of a chicken and egg one; ultimately it is the mutation that is what starts a cancer.
