Higher !: As your cervix effaces and dilates there's a higher chance that membranes may rupture. On first pregnancies the time between initial dilation from 2 to 4 cms may take over 24 hours if you are not in the active phase of labor.

Once : Once the water has broken, things often progress pretty quickly.  Not always, though.  Unfortunately, you can't do much to move things along other than to get up and walk around--as hard as that may be.

Once your water has broken there is an increased risk of infection, so if you are still at home, you should probably start on your way to the hospital.

Labor: Yes, you need to go to the hospital if you have a gush or leakage of fluid. Also go to the hospital with any bleeding, strong contractions that are 5-6 mon apart and last for an hour or if you don't feel baby move.

if water breaks @ 35.5 weeks and dilated 3cm, can doctors stop labour from progressing, or once both happen, that's it?

No: After water breaking you will deliver your baby. It's a preterm labor rupture of membrane. I imaging that you are in a maternity unit and you have been check by a doctor or midwife.  Likely your contractions will start within 24 hrs. If you tested pos for gbs during preg you will be induce asap. Risk of infection increase if baby not deliver within 48 hrs. Most doctor will induce and deliver asap.

i'm 36wks and 1 day preg, only a "fingertip" dilated but thinned out already, plus baby is positioned. can my water break and i not be dilated?

Yes: If it does break go directly to the hospital after contacting your OB and do not wait for contractions to avoid infection.

Maybe: You definitely can break your water without being dilated.  That happens all the time.  Whether stress or any other event can precipitate it is unclear.   But if you think you are leaking see your doctor today.  If you are ruptured, it is time to get delivered.

Yes: Can:  yes.  Should:  maybe.  

Most conscientious obstetricians do not induce a woman electively (just for convenience) before 39 weeks.  If this is your first pregnancy, and your cervix is not favorable, then inducting you now would increase your risk of cesarean section for failure to get into labor.  A favorable cervix is not only dilated, but thin, soft, forward, and with baby's head low.

Yes.: If you think you have broken your water go to the hospital now. You may also be having urinary incontinence. But better be safe than sorry.

Sure but: I have seen a few patients come in to the hospital ready to deliver and they did not think they were really that far along. A few times patients have delivered at home not thinking they were laboring so fast. These are certainly the exceptions to the the normal course of labor
