why do i always get really hyper when i take xanax (alprazolam) or valium?

Paradoxical reaction: Some people do experience agitation or arousal in response to benzodiazepines, including diazepam/valium & alprazolam/xanax. Sometimes this is because of partial sedation or loss of focus, which can be upsetting; this should improve with dose reduction. Sometimes it is due to impaired ability to read/respond to your surroundings, which can be frightening.

No: It's not a good idea to be taking 2 benzodiazepines at the same time -- either together or separately.  I cannot think of any pharmacological reason to prescribe both, but can think of several reasons why not to.

is there any way someone could have been found to have valium in their system even tho they've never taken it? i used to take xanax.

Accepted Answer

No: Screening urine testing can show false positives, however if definative testing was done such as gc/ms and it confirmed diazepam (valium) then it was in your system.

Yes if prescribed : I would take one or the other as prescribed. Both medications are habit forming and work on the gaba receptor where alcohol binds. You should not drive or operate heavy machinery.  If you take too much it can lower your drive to breathe

Minor: Grapefruit juice inhibits the liver enzymes that break down certain medicines, resulting in a small increase in the medicine's effect.  This definitely occurs with valium; there is some uncertainly whether it affects xanax (alprazolam) as much, or at all.  It takes a lot of grapefruit juice (at least a pint, probably more) to have this effect.  Tell your doc if you drink lots of grapefruit juice regularly.

What your Dr prescr: Prescribes. The decision regarding the dose of any medication like this is extremely personalized. People have tolerances to this class of medication all across the board. As physicians we try to provide just enough to treat the symptoms while adding in an antidepressant that has been antianxiety effect as well as psychotherapy. We try to keep the dose as little as possible and the treatment as short as possible with the realization that there are people who require extremely low dose short-term treatment and others who require the opposite.Severity of the anxiety interestingly does not always predict dose response.Some people with high anxiety get by on low doses and some people with relatively low anxiety require higher doses.This is why the practice of psychopharmacology is so individualized.

BZD+stimulant+SSRI: Duromine (phentermine) is a stimulant which can lead to worsened anxiety and insomnia. It can also cause or worsen depression. Similar to Ativan and xanax, (alprazolam) this medication can be habit forming, tolerance and dependance can occur, and a vicious cycle may set in. The question is best answered by the prescribing physician.

Xanax (alprazolam): Valium has limited usage at this time, due to its extended presence in the body (over 24 hrs).  Shorter acting meds like xanax (alprazolam) are much safer. Valium is still be given IV for some procedures.

Kinda sorta: So xanax (alprazolam) is a brand of Alprazolam which is in same family as valium (diazepam). Not being a veterinarian, i can't tell you whether doggie xanax (alprazolam) is any different from human xanax (alprazolam). However, xanax (alprazolam) is short acting than valium. That being said, contact doc's office for prescription. But unless you're claustrophobic, you'll do fine w/o any drug. Mri's just loud ; boring and you must keep still. No biggi.
