: If you are in a program, I am glad you are taking steps for your heath. In regards to sugar alcohol and ethanol (what you cannot have), they are not one and the same. Don't be confused. Although they share a similar name, sugar alcohol and alcoholic beverages do not have the same chemical structure. Sugar alcohol does not contain ethanol, which is found in alcoholic beverages.  So no problem.

1 mg or less : Higher doses of melatonin can actually interfere with normal sleep. Take 0.3 to 1 mg. And see how you do.

typically yes: Both are considered safe at pretty liberal doses.  However, if you have other medical problems or are on other medications, talk to a doctor or pharmacist first.

It is possible for : An individual with sleep problems who suffers from anxiety to take melatonin. Ensure that excellent sleep hygiene is used as well. Retire ; rise same time each day. Keep bedroom dark ; cool ; use only for sex ; sleep. Turn off tv. No naps. Exercise regularly but not in late evening. No caffeine for 6 hrs ; no alcohol or tobacco w/i 2 hrs of sleep. Keep dinner moderate sized ; finish at least 2 to.

I was unable to find: Any interactions between magnesium and melatonin using a drug interaction checker. However, there is never a 100% guarantee.

It is preferrable: Not to use long term- but I have many patients who do use it long term with success. Are you using excellent sleep hygiene? If not- try that first. 1. Keep regular bed ; wakening time (includes weekends). Get up same time daily. 
2. Make a regular, relaxing bedtime routine: warm bath or shower, aromatherapy, reading, or listening to gentle music. 
3. Sleep in dark, quiet, cool room w comfortable.

can a 10 year old boy take 1mg melatonin ?

Accepted Answer

Yes but why?: Melatonin can help with sleep for some and is useful for jet lag.  A 10 year old should be able to sleep without artificial aids and it is a good idea not to get him into the habit of using such assistance.
