hi, i took 1 pill of l-tryptophan (500mg) on 7/5 to reduce my anxiety and it actually made it worse. i was reading online that i shouldn't mix l-tryptophan with any ssri's. i havent started my celexa yet. how soon can i take my celexa?

Choose &amp; take daily: Taking 1 pill of any medication for anxiety will not result in significant changes in mood. L-tryptophan and 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) are needed by the brain to manufacture serotonin. Taking supplements of these requires up to 1 month for the effects to be obvious. The same for Celexa. Don't expect the effects to be obvious after 1 pill. Take the pills (choose one) consistently to see effects.

Medicines: Please never take tryptophan while taking Percocet - have your doctor decide what meds to use.

: Taking tryptophan will not do you any good, other than lightening your wallet.
Have a healthy diet, exercise 30 minutes/day, drink plenty of water daily so your urine is mostly colorless, have safe sex, no tobacco alcohol weed or street drugs. For nutrition: http://www.choosemyplate.gov/.

: Since Xanax is psychotropic medication it is best to discuss this with your Primary Care Physician or Psychiatrist who knows your medical history. If you are not confident in your Dr. please see another for a second opinion.

bought some amino acid pills. amongst ingredients is 38mg l-tryptophan. i also take 15mg lexapro (escitalopram). will this cause any issues?

No: But the Amino Acid pills are a waste of money. Your body will break them down as any other protein and generate 4 calories of energy/gram. Don't get your medical information from friends, tv or the internet. Food is a better source of protein than pills.

can you take trazadone 50 mg, temazepam 30 mg 1.5 grams of l-tryptophan and 325 mg of magnesium all together?

Probably but why: YOu can probably take all this with little in the way of harm.  I feel that if you need the trazodone that is fine. The temazepam might be all you need. Would not use the tryptophan as the temazepam and the trazodone should be all you need.  I would skip the magnesium.

Unsure: Generally I would say no but L-tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin which is a powerful hormone,   There is little data on taking this long-term and often it may create a grogginess.  Try to use lowest dose possible recommended and see why you may need it.

Yes: no concerns regarding serotonin syndrome one month after stopping your Abilify (aripiprazole) and using L-tryptophan. Be careful with the fat burner as many of these have substances which can be harmful. Hope this was helpful. Best of luck Dr. R

As long as you like: Congrats on deciding to quit smoking. Pyridoxal-5-phosphate is active form of vitamin B6. L-trytophan is an essential amino acid that is converted into serotonin, a neurotransmitter. L-tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid that is converted into neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine &amp; epinephrine. All are safe for human use but always check w/your Family Doc (who might recommend bupropion).
