Probably: We have little evidence about any harmful effects.  Trust what your OB/GYN suggests to you.  If you continue to have concerns, get a second opinion.

Unlikely: Reye syndrome is a rare complication  to flu or chickenpox that is treated with aspirin or aspirin derived products. Less than 10% of maternal intake is transferred in the milk. Aspirin is considered a marginal but acceptable maternal drug during BF. Babies this age get congested/sneezy  from inhaled irritants like dust/fragrance.

Breastfeeding: In general, it is best to avoid medications unless they are critical to your well being. Please speak with your cardiologist regarding the necessity of Bayer (aspirin) for your health.

is it safe to take "baby" asprin while breastfeeding?  i am worried about increasing the risk of reye's syndrome in my nursing infant.

Caution advised: Aspirins use during breast feeding viewed with caution. Ibuprofen has a similar anti -platelet effect as baby Aspirin but is considered safe.

Probably okay: Aspirin is considered a possible problem when taken at higher doses (1000 mg/d) as it does transfer to baby and can affect their metabolism.Low dose products are less worrisome, but avoided if the kid has any viral illness.

how long should i wait to breastfeed if i took alka seltzer plus? (night time) it has 500 mg aspirin! how long will it take to be out of my breastmilk

Wouldn't worry: If baby is otherwise healthy I would continue to feed and just avoid aspirin in the future. We don't like to expose kids with any viral illness because of its association with Reye syndrome under those conditions. Otherwise it is just there, and a relative transfer of 2-10% occurs. If sick, pump and dump for 8 hours and it should be fine thereafter.

None: You can breast feed with Aspirin in take.  If it is of concern use tylenol (acetaminophen) or motrin.

i took one 325 mg aspirin before checking if that was okay.  is it safe to breastfeed my daughter tonight when she wakes to eat?

Accepted Answer

Probably safe: With one dose you are probably perfectly safe. Everything one does in medicine involves a calculation of the risk of a course of action weighed against the presumed benefit of that course of action.  In this instance, unless there is some underlying condition that you have not yet revealed I would think only one tab of Advil (ibuprofen) is enough.

i took some aspirin today around five how long should i wait to breastfeed my 3 week old baby?

Not sure: No good answer to that question that I was able to find. . Peak ASA levels from what I saw was 9 hrs. Maybe a pharmacist would have a better idea. You shouldn't take ASA and breast feed.
