i have painful spot inside one of my nasal cavities/nostrils. it is on the outer wall, not the septum. i have had this for some time, but today is quite painful. i cannot feel a growth. who do i see to have it assessed?

Painful spot: Any lesion of more than 2 weeks duration requires investigation. Please see an Otolaryngologist, your General Physician, or Urgent Care.

i have had deviated septum for long time, saw my ent few months back, but since then it feels one nostril where septum deviated to ( left side), has been blocked. he did not see anything else then, but i wonder why it may be getting worse.61yrs?

: These bony structures are lined by layers of mucus membrane cells that can swell from irritant or allergic stimulation. This swelling can easily decrease the available air movement on either side of the nose. The membranes also create mucus secretions than can be either thick or thin. The thicker secretions on a swollen membrane can block either or both nasal passages, septal deviation or not.

Usually nothing: Septal deviation is present in 80% of the population.  That means only 20% of the population has a straight septum!  if you are having nasal obstructive symptoms (nostril always blocked, snoring etc) then you *may* be a candidate to have something done surgically, though usually you'd be tried on nasal allergy medicine first.   Otherwise there is no need for you to have anything done for this.

if one of my nostrils is larger than the other, do i have a deviated septum? what are the symptoms of a deviated septum?

Perhaps: A deviated septum is simply crooked cartilage and bone in the septum which is the divider inside your nose. If the very end of the cartilage is displaced it can alter the size of the nostril opening but sometime it is due to the nostril itself.  This can usually be corrected with surgery. You should consult with a facial plastic or ENT surgeon to discuss that.

always have white hard bumps on septum with recurrent sores that are painful. both nostrils, though left is worse. what could this be?

Sores in Nose: The white hard bumps could be milia which are superficial cysts under the skin. Sores in the nose are usually caused be a bacteria called staph. Prescription topical Mupirocin applied inside the nose is helpful for this skin condition.

Septal deviation: If your septum isn't midline, it could be deviated. If you are having symptoms like nasal obstruction, have your nose evaluated by a board certified otolaryngologist,

Epistaxis: The main cause is dryness of mucosa on the septum. This can be treated by applying vaseline once or twice a day. This is made worst by aging because the membranes get thinner with age and thus can breakdown more easily by dryness.

does a septoplasty ever leave visible scars? my septum is deviated right near my nostrils, so i assume the incisions would be right at the front, too. does that mean scars might be visible?

The : The septoplasty incision is usually hidden inside the nostril such that it isn't visible. In some instances an open septo-rhinoplasty approach is needed to straighten the septum. This is more likley if the caudal septum (portion closest to the nostrils) is very deviated.

Yes: Septal deviations occurring along the most anterior or projecting edge known as the caudal septum can distort the nostril. In addition a septL deviation can produce secondary changes such as valve collapse resulting in a pinched nostril shape.  Seek an ent surgeon or facial plastic surgeon to examine completely.
