Accepted Answer

Yes: If your cycles are irregular, you may be slightly off on dates. A pregnancy should be seen by 5 weeks and a beta of 1000, so I would suggest a followup transvaginal ultrasound a week after the prior one. If no pregnancy is seen at that point, then some concern would arise regarding the viability of your pregnancy. Please follow closely with your OB until the issue is cleared up.

Normal: At 4 weeks and 2 days I'm surprised you can see a gestational sac.  At 6 weeks of pregnancy you can see the baby, usually a small line called the "fetal pole".  It's okay at this point if you don't see it.

Once betaHCG &gt;1000: Blood levels of betaHCG are better and often more reliable than last menstrual period (LMP) or suspected "conception day" and best correlated with the sonographic findings of current transvaginal ultrasound. Once the betaHCG levels pass 1000mIU/ml, most skilled sonographer may detect a small intrauterine gestational sac , as a first sonographic finding.

so i took eight pregnancy tests went to the doctor to confirm they did an abdominal ultrasound but didn't see a gestational sac they said i wasn't pregnant. but after that i missed two periods and still have positive pregnancy tests. am i pregnant?

: It would be useful to get a blood test for HCG level and a repeat ultrasound examination. If you have been pregnant for two months, a fetus would be detectable by ultrasound.

Accepted Answer

Yolk sac: This may not be normal if you are not off on your dating.  It could represent a miscarriage.  However, if you are off on dating, you can do another ultrasound and/or have your doctor perform a series of pregnancy tests at least every 48 hours apart.  Either or both (preferably) can help give you an answer.  Normally, the blood test numbers will go up by 50% in a 48 hr time period.

It may be normal.: Your dates may be off, or the machine used to scan your pelvis may not be good enough to see a yolk sac and an embryonic pole. For more details, get a transvaginal ultrasound and repeat in a week. Take Folic Acid 1-5 mg daily and best of luck!

i had my first ultrasound today and all they were able to see if the gestational sac. i'm 5 weeks and 5 days. is this normal at this stage to only see the sac?

: At "5w 5d" gestational age, it is possible to not yet have definition of fetal heart activity.  A repeat in 10 days should definitely see other than only the gestational sac, if indeed the dates are accurate.

Unclear: it may be too early to see a fetus and for sure it is too early for the heartbeat.
OR it could mean that the fetus has not developed and that the pregnancy will not develop.
no harm in waiting 10 days and repeating the ultrasound.
would advise blood pregnancy tests 3 days apart twice to see if levels rising appropriately also.
