No: Even if the cat has rabies, and I have not heard of that as a source in the usa, the claws would not be infected and while other conditions like 'cat scratch fever' can arise from a scratch, rabies is not on the table.

No: Rabies in america is mostly from wild animals like the bat, raccoon, fox etc. And some domestic dogs that are not vaccinated. I am not aware of rabies from cat scratch. However, if you are scratched by a kitty, beware of cat scratch disease then. Hope that you are healthy.

Low risk exposure: In the US, most rabies exposure is from bats and internationally, 99% of rabies is dog related.  The WHO categorizes:  Category I – touching or feeding animals, licks on intact skin. No prophyllaxis. Category II – nibbling of uncovered skin, minor scratches or abrasions without bleeding: Vaccination and local Rx of the wound. Category III – single or multiple transdermal bites or scratches, licks

Nonbite exposures: i.e. scratches from a (wild) cat would rarely cause rabies. It is almost always transmitted by a bite. But it has been reported.  I don't know what the timing is now since your exposure (scratch) but you should be seen and have your exposure and wound evaluated. Prior immunization is your greatest protection. Good wishes:)

Probably not...: While rabies is certainly transmissible from cats to humans, it generally requires an ill cat bite not scratch. The infected saliva of an infected animal transmits the rabies virus through injured skin, thereby inoculatin the victim. Incubation of rabies in a human after exposure is 1-3 months typically. I would be much more concerned about the possibility of cat scratch disease.

However, it is possible that the cat might have licked its claws before scratching you, so it is possible to catch rabies from a cat scratch, though this would be very rare. A cat scratch is much more likely to transmit cat scratch fever, an infection caused by a bacteria called Bartonella henselae.

Locate the cat: Cats, dogs and ferrets are the 3 animals that we know we can monitor them for 10 days - and if they are 'fine' after a bite or a scratch, then you won't get rabies. The problem is, cats CAN be instrumental in propagating disease - so I would take this seriously. About 1 in 1000 rabies cases is from a scratch, so the odds are low - but I would still see a doc about this for more info.

Safe: You are safe. Rabies is transmitted through saliva and less likely to be transmitted from superficial wounds compared to deep puncture wounds. You won't get rabies from that.
