i had a laparoscopic cholecystectomy just over a week ago. the wounds are healing fine, but after a couple of days i began to get severe mid/upper back pain, which is not improving at all. i have no other symptoms and the gas pains have gone. ideas?

You may: have a "leakage" from the point where the duct was sealed off !!!! Contact your surgeon ASAP!!!! or go to ER

Acid reflux: Acid reflux can cause back pain especially if there is inflammation in the esophagus.  This kind of acid reflux really deserves seeing a doctor about to evaluate for further testing and treatment.

Get examined: Your symptoms required a medicial examination- not online answers-get a full medical,and GI evaluation. Consider a CT scan of the abdomen- don't look for answers online- these issues require medical attention.

What is gas?: If you mean a feeling of pain such as caused by gas in the intesting, that kind of feeling in the back (depending on where) can be due to anything from a skin infection to actual gas in some internal organ.  
If they have done every test,  I suggest you ask for an appointment to discuss their DIAGNOSIS...that would probably be with your primary practitioner.

i have gerd, when i have a lot of gas  i get upper back pain, goes away after burping , happens when i eat big meals usually?

Simethicone: Simethicone dissolves the gas and that will help you. Obviously, eat smaller meals. Check and make sure you are not gulping down air when nervous or talking too fast (aerophagy). Consider taking a proton pump inhibitor to fix your gerd.  May want to discuss your options with a GI specialist, may want to check for barrett's esophagus at some point also.

Abdominal Pain: Abdominal pain can be at the same location everyday. This could represent inflammation in the stomach, intestines or trapped gas pockets in your intestines. I would recommend this to be evaluated by your doctor or a gastroenterologist and get you the appropriate treatment.

Yes this is normal: Gas is just air that is in you GI tract. Because air moves around, you can feel the gas in many different parts of your abdomen.

You may want to start keeping a food diary to see what foods may cause you to have more gas and try not to eat those particular foods. There are also over the counter medications like Gas-ex or simethicone that can help break up gas in your GI tract.

Motility problem: In sleeve resection where at least or more than 80 %  stomach is removed , small gastric tube or sleeve is made. Stomach may be unable to empty, you may need motility studies , & gastric emptying  ( GI ) may be due to  partial  vagus nerve loss although bariatric surgeons  believe   physiologically vagus denervation is beneficial   see your surgeon.

Will resolve: U describe a mild form of ileus, in which intestinal motility is decreased, usually due to inactivity and prescribed narcotics for pain.  While this ileus usually resolves in a few days, if u walk, drink enough fluids, minimize or eliminate the use of narcotic pain pills, then this will speed your recovery.  If u are unable to hold down fluids, have fever or  worsening abdominal pain, see ur md.
