Using a mask in public places will protect against respiratory infection and prevent sinus infections. Doing steam inhalation to help in clearing out the sinuses may shorten the time you experience this smell.

? congestion: Of your nasal cavity and your sinuses can give you the same symptoms, chronic congestion can lead to chronic inflammation and later infection, not sure what kind of MRI you had? Was it direced towards your sinuses or part of head examination which at times shows part of the sinuses not the whole system, get seen by your doctor who would refer you to an ENT, goodluck

Yes: Molar tooth roots can extend into the maxillary (cheek) sinuses.  During a difficult extraction of molar teeth, the bone and mucosal lining around the tooth and sinus floor can get disrupted creating an opening between the mouth and sinus cavity.  This opening or fistula, by introducing oral cavity bacteria into the sinus, can lead to sinus disease.
