A fluid sac: It is basically a serous (slightly thicker than water) sac of fluid collection, which sometime develops as a complication after certain surgial procedure, often inabdominal.

Seroma: It is usually swelling at the area and sometimes some pain or a feeling of sloshing fluid and even sometimes leaking of clear fluid.

Fluid Collection: It is normal and expected for tissue fluid to seep into any open space that follows an operation--we call these fluid collections seromas.  In time, the fluid is absorbed and replaced by scar tissue.  Rarely, this fluid persists, requiring aspiration, or becomes infected, requiring drainage.  Bottom line:  99% of the time, no worries.

Depends: Depends on the size and location of the hernia and type of repair. Inguinal hernia repair done open is typically 2-3 weeks, laparoscopic 1-2 weeks. Medium sized ventral hernia done open or lap is around 3-6 weeks. There are however many variables, so call your surgeon to find out for sure.

No empty spaces: A seromma is a fluid collection  our bodies produce in response to the inflammation of healing.  After surgery, any "empty spaces" that do not have tissues moved into them fill with serum.  Excess serum causes the wound to expand and prevent healing so removing it helps the space close.  However, after removing the vac-pac, there still may be a little space left and so some serum will recur.

Postop Breast Lump: A  seroma is a fluid collection that (always) develops in open cavities after surgery.  In time, your body will replace this fluid with scar tissue. Rarely, the fluid will persist and require needle aspiration, sometimes repeatedly.  After a lumpectomy, a seroma will feel like a persistent breast lump. If this persists months later and is causing discomfort, aspiration is indicated.

Usually not required: Most of the serums get absorbed and disappear in few wks , if it is not painful , not pressing  on other organs , aspiration is not recommended  , as it may give infection.

Fullness, drainage: Seromas are fairly common after lumpectomy, should be distinguished from a hematoma (blood clot).  Both can present with fullness (and discomfort) in the area of the surgery and drainage, although hematomas tend to drain bloody fluid and present earlier than serums.  Treatment generally includes repeated aspirations in the office until the seroma resolves.  If it is red, abscess if possible also.

Maybe: I do not know where it is located or how the hematoma occurred. Hematoma is a collection of blood  outside the vascular system. As the body resorbs it, the hematoma contents naturally liquefy and sometimes enlarges slightly. The fluid or seroma remaining then usually becomes resorbed and disappears.

what are the chances of a hernia recurrance  after 6 mths. have not lifted over 50- 75 lbs. had it done laproscropic. did develope a lg seroma after?

Low: The chances are low but not zero. If the symptoms are there don't ignore them , a recurrent hernia is more dangerous than a primary one. Go see the doc who did your surgery.
