No: Drinking moderate amounts of alcohol will not damage the heart in any way.  Excessive alcohol intake over a long period of time can cause damage to the heart. There is no reason that you can't responsible consume alcohol after heart surgery.

NO: Mild to moderate alcohol use can increase "good" cholesterol , but doesn't affect calcium deposits on valve.  I suspect you are on a blood thinner for valve, which CAN be adversely affected by alcohol.

It's bad post-op: Alcohol impairs the bodies immune system, including the white cells that eat up germs and those that make antibodies, as well as the cells (fibroblasts) that help us lay down fibrous tissue and scar.  It is also, depending on the dose, potentially toxic to the heart, weakening the heartbeat. It also impairs blood clotting, and if you are any anti-clotting agents is dangerous. Talk to your md.

Not necessarily: In general, up to modest use of alcohol should be ok unless you have exaggerated BP or arrhythmia responses or alcohol related heart muscle problem, there is no a priori reason to avoid alcohol after valve surgery.

Accepted Answer

Soon: Usually you can drink coffee as early as you can eat or drink anything else.  If you have arrhythmias post-operatively, we recommend not drinking caffeinated products however.

im 36 y/o non-smoker and doesnt drink. has a congenital heart disease (heart valve repair at birth) has excessive night sweats for last 10 years and now i have a swollen neck gland that is tender to touch. lost 20 lbs so far no common cold or infects?

Accepted Answer

: Time to seek medical attention as the night sweats and weight loss are significant. A thyroid condition among many other possibilities may contribute to current symptoms. Best would be to start with your PCP  who can coordinate workup and possible local referrals.

Generally yes: Check with your doc, but in general, alcohol in moderation is ok after you are healed from your surgery.

No: I strongly urge you curtail alcohol consumption sharply. If not, you are asking for serious additional cardiac issues.
