i have 1000mg of azithromycin. can i crush it and put it in my drink ? will it cause heart arrhythmia ?

: Despite warnings and internet buzz about azithromycin and EKG abnormalities that predispose to arrhythmia, it almost never happens. Crushing it or taking the pills whole makes no difference. It will taste extremely bitter if you crush and drink it, but it will work just fine. However, this may not be the best treatment for you anyway; comment to follow.

can i crush 2 500mg tablets of sustained release zithromax and put it in a fruit smoothie and drink it? i have a hard time swallowing large pills.

Accepted Answer

Nope.: I would not crush it, as you are changing how available the medication is in your system... more may be introduced into your bloodstream at one time than through gradual digestion.  Consider liquid versions of the antibiotics if swallowing is difficult.

is it ok to put azithromycin in a hot drink?

Accepted Answer

No!: First, Azithromycin (zithromax) is not mean to be mixed with anything except the liquid provided by the pharmacy (when it comes to you as a suspension).  Mixing it with any other liquids than water could inactivate the drug, and then you're not getting the antibiotic effect you just pain a bunch of money for!  and you won't get better!
secondly, Azithromycin is not heat stable above 86 degrees.

Probably OK: Alcohol generally does not interfere with any antibiotic. Azithromycin can irritate the GI tract, with abdominal pain, nausea, etc, and so can alcohol -- so the two together could be uncomfortable. Probably best to not take them together, at least a couple hours apart. Otherwise no worries if it doesn't bother your stomach.

: unknown; this hasn’t been studied. Take it immediately to be sure it will be effective.

Yes: but a liquid form is already available. Indeed, the majority of doses of it in the pediatric population is as a powder you mix up with water (keep in the refrigerator after it is mixed or use immediately).

Wait..: three or four more days. What's the hurry. Dry sockets often occur in females between the third and fifth day after extraction; more frequently if on BCP's.

Yes: Yes. Can be crushed. It comes in liquid as well.

Zithromax: There are no interactions between Zithromax and alcohol so that should not be a problem. I would waint atleast 24 hours so the medicine gets absorbed.

Yes: Alcohol in unnatural amounts, as in alcoholic drinks, is toxic to living tissues. An alcohol abuser can safely gradually stop drinking alcohol with the help of her doctor. If no doctor is available at all, she can slowly come off the alcohol... such as weaning down gradually over a one month period, to zero drinks, and then never touch the stuff again (plus stay away from people who are drinking).
