had my eyebrows tweezed in a beauty salon,shed some blood.not sure if the lady sanitized the shared tweezers. am i at risk of hep c or other diseases?

Accepted Answer

Very unlikely: that the virus would survive on a pair of tweezers however that does not make it a good practice to use instruments from client to client without cleaning them properly!

is there something i can put on a splinter to help draw it to the surface? my son has a splinter too deep to get with tweezers.

Not that I know of: Splinters can be left alone if they show no signs of inflammation & they will work their way out over time. If they are deep to the  dermal junction, they may be anchored & expose deep  skin to infection so extraction will be necessary. Most primary care providers have experience with brief extraction procedures that may include use of a local anesthetic.

my 18mos old has a small thorn in his heal and i can not get it out with tweezers. what should i do? will it come out on its own?

Foreign body: Tiny foreign bodies that are embedded in the skin will generally dissolve or extrude on their own with time, providing they are organic in nature (plant material vs. glass).   Excessive attempts at remove can increase inflammation, pain and infection risk.  Local wound care and close observation is usually all that is needed in the interim.

how to get a tick out with tweezers?

See below: The rec way is as follows:  if available, use tweezers and grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible (if none, use a cloth or paper to protect your fingers).  Pull straight up gently, steady pressure. Don't twist or jerk.  Don't squeeze, crush or puncture the tick.  Disinfect the skin afterward and wash hands.  If any mouthparts remain, leave alone as they will be expelled spontaneously.

Wimpy Virus: It is important to remember that viruses like hepc, HIV and others are strings of proteins that are connected by very weak bonds.  They require many things to stay active and need living cells to reproduce and survive.  Unless there was gross blood, mucous or some other organic substance on that tweezers and it got into an open wound, the odds are very unlikely.

Maybe: I would be cautious.  A splinter can cause serious infeciton even if you think it is minor.  If you cannot easily prick the splinter out with a sterile needle after a good prep of the area with soap and water and perhaps some alcohol, then you should seek help from someone qualified to assiste your.  If a splinter "festers" it does come to the surface.  The body will try to expel it.

Accepted Answer

Ouch!: Sometimes just leaving it alone will do the trick.  However, if you can't wait a sharp small incision over the site will often  allow the splinter a way out.  Also could soak finger in epsom salts. This creates an osmotic gradient which might help.  Keep an eye out for infection - redness, swelling, warmth, pain, red streaks and more than a little discharge.  If this occurs - game over - see doc.

Accepted Answer

Very unlikely: This would require a recent use of these very tweezers on an HIV positive person who is not treating his illness, so he/she has a viral load and in whom the tweezers broke the skin leading to blood communication.  Then the same tweezers would need to be used on you fairly quickly also breaking your skin (not just pulling out a lash) and transfering the virus.  Very unlikely set of events.

very thick white nasal discharge that is stretchy. it won't blow out i have to get it out with tweezers. what is this? i have never had it before.

Mucus: Using nasal saline rinses or product like Mucinex or guaifenesin may help thin out the mucus

Accepted Answer

You need to watch: out for symptoms and signs of infection called cellulitis/ abscess.  This includes worsening pain, swelling, redness, thick white or discolored drainage, or heat in the area.  See a healthcare provider right away if these things happen.
