can the paraguard iud cause endometrial lining to thicken?

Accepted Answer

Not really : The paragard iud is hormone free. It works by creating a toxic environment for sperm preventing fertilization. Because it is hormone free it has no real effect on the endometrial lining. It does not thin it out like Mirena (levonorgestrel) but also does not thicken it either.

a friend of mine claims paragard iuds can cause positive pregnancy tests, by producing the hcg hormone. this is completely false, right?

Wrong: Paragard IUDs do not cause + pregnancy tests, so if somebody does have a positive pregnancy test with a Paragard IUD in place, this should be evaluated further to determine if the pregnancy is in the uterus or outside the uterus (ectopic pregnancy)

i believe there are only 5 contraceptive iuds approved in the us, paragard, mirena, kyleena, liletta, and skyla. is avibela one of them? if anyone knows anything about this particular contraceptive?

: Paragard is a Copper IUD (no hormone), all the others including Avibela are progestin IUD (Levonorgestrel is a progestin hormone that is released by the IUD for the contraceptive effects). The doses of progestin will vary between these brands (and the same the duration for use)  Mirena and Liletta 52mg, Skyla and Kyleena 19.5mg. Abivela is not available in US, it is equivalent to Liletta.

Not usually: The main way that paragard prevents pregnancy is by thickening the cervical mucus, to prevent sperm from passing through the cervix, but it also has an effect of causing inflammation in the uterus that can be 'toxic' to sperm that do make it into the uterus, and it does have a small chance of causing abortions, if a sperm makes it past both of those hazards.

i have the paraguard iud, 4 years now. the past few months between periods i have a brownish sour smelling discharge. what could be the cause?

Have it checked: make sure not infection.
however the IUD can cause increase discharge

i just recently had the paragard iud put in.a week later and now i have cervicitis.could the paragard cause cervicitis?and i've been with the same man.

Possibly : Infections are increased in the first two weeks after iud placement. This is from passing something through the vagina and cervix and into the uterus.  This can be minimized by checking for infections prior to insertion. The treatment is antibiotics followed by a repeat test for infection after completing the antibiotics. Rarely does the iud need to be removed.

Your physician can assess to determine the cause of these sx's.

No relationship: Iud's do not cause headaches or migraines. Tough to treat migraine hormonally, but perhaps a preventative medication will stop the headaches.  Work out a  plan with your neurologist.

can paragard iud cause hair loss? i have not had a baby, surgery, not a thyroid or a anaemia problem.  my only change has been an iud. its not genetic.

IUDs: I have seen online complaints of hair loss with iuds, but usually with hormonal iuds like mirena (levonorgestrel).  Its not a listed side effect with paragard.  You might want to see a dermatologist and ask if there are other causes of your loss or if it could be an odd copper allergy side effect.

Test: If you have missed your period, you should take a pregnancy test. If it is positive, you need to get in to have your IUD removed right away. Take care.
