Kidney disease: Your elevated creatinine and low GFR are likely due to diabetes damaging your kidney. It is imperative that you control your diabetes closely to avoid further damage. Your doctor can also prescribe medication to protect your kidney from diabetes damage. If you have high blood pressure, that also needs to be controlled tightly. Please discuss all these issues with your doctor.

ive just had a phonecall from the doctor as my recent blood test is showing raised parathyroid hormone level (i am on thyroid tablets already) and serum protein electrothoresis showing a monoclonal igg iam bda paraprotein. what does this mean?

: You should not confuse thyroid gland with parathyroid glands. Parathyroid glands, usually 4 of them, are imbedded in the thyroid. You take thyroxine for hypothyroidism but you have hyperparathyroidism (i.e hyperactive parathyroid glands).  Because of high calcium level, your doctor ordered PTH level and serum electropheresis. Please read the next comment because there is not enough space.

i've recently had a thyroid blood test, and my results came back at 8.1, which says my thyroid is underactive. i'm 34 yrs old. the results have been the same for about 2 years now. should i be on medication? what can i do in terms of my diet to help?

About TSH...: The doctor usually checks the TSH level in the blood, and tries to make it a normal level. The doctor will adjust the levothyroxine medication dose, to get the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) to go to a normal level, and to get the patient to feel well again. If symptoms or lab results are unusual, more evaluation is done because not every case is a simple one.

hi, last week i had a blood test & my tsh was 0.75.yesterday,i had a glucose test & they drew blood again for thyroid (not sure why).this time i was fasting & my tsh came back 2.55.could there be such a big difference between fasting & not fasting?

Doubtful: Although no special preparations are necessary for the tsh test, it can vary somewhat later in the day so morning is preferable.  If you had other thyroid blood tests were they all also normal? We usually do not ask our patients to fast for a tsh test.

See below: T4 and T3 (liothyronine) are two major thyroid hormones and can be measured accurately in blood. The levels will be low if you thyroid is functioning less than normal. See this site for more info.

Yes: Patients can have normal function of the thyroid which is measured by blood test but have an enlarged thyroid or thyroid nodules  which are seen with imaging on ultrasound.

You need to ask your doctor to give you all the results related to your thyroid, not just one. You need to know if your thyroid levels are normal or not, then you and your doctor can make decisions about treatment if needed.

can an under active thyroid get better? i stopped taking meds after 4 years. blood test came back normal! did it heal? no more meds?

Complex answer: Good question. I would want to know: 1. Were you hypothyroid in the first place. 2. What was the cause?   Was your neck tender? If you had subacute thyroiditis, you could be transiently hypo and then recover completely.  If you had hashimotos, you can have a flair, and then recover, but you will likely become permanently hypo eventually. Don't assume you are permanently better; good follow up.
