A member asked:

I've recently had a thyroid blood test, and my results came back at 8.1, which says my thyroid is underactive. i'm 34 yrs old. the results have been the same for about 2 years now. should i be on medication? what can i do in terms of my diet to help?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

About TSH...: The doctor usually checks the TSH level in the blood, and tries to make it a normal level. The doctor will adjust the levothyroxine medication dose, to get the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) to go to a normal level, and to get the patient to feel well again. If symptoms or lab results are unusual, more evaluation is done because not every case is a simple one.
