i am 42 years old, and was just diagnosed with active epstein-barr/mono. could this be connected with the shingles i had 1o years ago?

No connection: Epstein Barr virus infects B cells and is totally different than varicella zoster virus, the agent that causes chicken pocks and shingles (lives dormant in the nerves and can reactivate).  Ask you physician if you can get the Zostavax Shingeles vaccine and prevent Shingles.  Having the infection does not prevent re-infection like the vaccine does.

YES: but I do not advise anti-viral medication for mono. Cold sores ( HSV-1) can occur for many reasons: illness, stress, tension, poor nutrition. I suggest informing your PCP about testing for  HSV which can possibly , not necessarily causative.

EBV, shingles: Ebv and shingles are caused by two different viruses. Ebv can have a chronic form. Your doctor can examine you and check igm and igg for ebv. 
Shingles can recur when your immune system is down. There is a shot to help your body keep the shingles under control. Rest, moderate exercise, and a well balanced diet also help you get healthy.

Steatosis: Fatty live is most commonly caused by a condition know as non-alcoholic fatty steatosis or nash. Alcohol consumption may also contribute to fatty liver. Mono can affect the liver but usually resolves with time.  Disseminated herpes zoster which causes shingles can also involve the liver, mainly seen in the immunocompromised state. Follow-up is recommended.

Viral infections: can skew CBC results. I suggest a repeat CBC and reevaluation of lymph node enlargement.

"Kissing  Disease" : "glandular fever" or "pfeiffer's disease" is  caused by the epstein–barr virus.

does mono always cause a fever?

Accepted Answer

Depends: For you to recognize it as mono there is likely enough going on with the body that fever would be expected at some point.However, there are likely some that come in contact with the germ, become infected without any symptoms and show a positive blood test later."Sub-clinical" infections are a common way that germs spread in the community without people knowing where they got it.
