can sciatica cause my whole leg to swell.  i am being treated for sciatica for a couple of years now.  but i have never had my whole leg swell.

Not typical: Sciatica typically does not cause the whole like to see well. Swelling in the lower leg can happen if there is weakness and the muscles are not pumping blood back to the heart. In your situation, if it is truly the entire leg that is swelling, I would be concerned about a vascular problem and have this evaluated right away. An ultrasound of the leg would be the most prudent first step.

can sciatica cause knees to swell after standing or walking for awhile? or tightness behind knee? i feel the nerve behind my thigh sometimes..maybe its irritated. when i do sciatica stretches i feel some relief. knee hasnt been swollen for some time?

: Are you overweight is my concern, however sciatica is used to describe the compression on the sciatic nerve that may come from abnormalities in the structures as it comes out of the spine, it may show is pain behind the thigh . The knee swelling is probably a different issue and it is best to get physical evaluation for better management.

Unlikely: It is thought that the annular tears may leak protiens that irritate the nerve root without compression i recommend confirming the suspected pain generator with a selective epidural injection. Can cause siatica back of leg at L5 or s1.What level was the protrusion at? By entire leg did you mean the front of the thigh as well?

Yes: Changes involving the facet joints related to degeneration can create sciatic symptoms related to inflammation or due to nerve compression secondary to stenosis or narrowing of the nerve root exit due to overall degenerative changes at that spine level or due to facet joint overgrowth or instability or even due to a synovial cyst forming from a facet joint or all the above.
