i take prilosec in morning and zantac (ranitidine) at bedtime. zantac (ranitidine)  helped at night for a while..but now it isn't.  what can i do.

Increase the prilose: You may take an additional Prilosec at bedtime, or see your doctor for a rx strength
medication. An antacid as an additional 
medication may also be helpful.
If you have symptoms of relux over 2 times a week which are unrelieved with over the counter medications,  (burning from acid in your esophagus) you should seeyour dr.

my doc advised me to take 40mg pantoprazole twice a day and ranitidine 300 mg at bedtime.is it safe for me?

Nocturnal acid : It is not a standard of care in practice to combine ppi and h2 blocker. It has side effects but there is one study that shows some benefit in lowering the reflux but i don't suggest to do it,    see here: addition of a h2 receptor antagonist to ppi improves acid control and decreases nocturnal acid breakthrough.

Tomatoes?: High fat meals and fried foods, large meals, chocolate, coffee, with or without caffeine, alcohol, mint, carbonated beverages, citrus juices, and tomato products all may aggravate gerd.

Yes, these: medications are safe and effective when all taken within a 24 hour period of time. Daily.

i've been having severe heartburn for the past couple of days. i want to take medication but terrified of side effects. is zantac (ranitidine) or pepcid better?

Accepted Answer

Heartburn: For classic heartburn, zantac or pepcid gives quicker relief than ppi's such as prilosec or nexium (esomeprazole). It's also helpful to follow a bland,low fat diet and avoid alcohol,caffeine,chocolate and tobacco. I wouldn't expect any significant side effects from zantac or pepcid.

if a person pre-medicates w/xyzal & zantac, (ranitidine) can they take an nsaid drug, if that drug has caused minor hives in the past? get skin reaction only.

Possibly: Both xyzal (levocetirizine) & zantac have anti-histamine effects & may decrease or eliminate a mild reaction to nsaid. However, this can be dangerous. Repeat exposures to something you are allergic to can be more severe, including breathing & swallowing difficulties, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or mouth. 6 classes of nsaids exist; you may not be allergic to other NSAID classes.  An allergist may help a lot.

i just took 2 ibuprofen and i took 150mg ranitidine 1 hr ago. i take ranitidine twice a day for gerd. i took the ibuprofen for a headache. are there any interactions between these drugs?

: Not interaction between the medication but ibuprofen can irritate GERD so would be better to use acetominophen for your headache.

East and West: This is an Ayurvedic herbal rasayana formula and you really need to ask your Eastern practitioner about how to (if at all) combine it w/ Western medications. W/ some it may be fine - w/ others not.  Be specific when you ask. Your Western Dr is less likely to know about this but you can ask them too. Best!
