Plugged ears: This is a great question and it really addresses  the normal anatomy of the nose and ears.  The middle ear and nose are directly connected by way of a tube called the eustachian tube.  When you blow your nose, air is forced into the nose and up the eustachian tube.  This will cause an increase in pressure in the middle ear, which will quickly dissipate with swallowing.

Sinusitis : Sinusitis or inflammation of the sinuses can cause all the symptoms that you describe. Due to blockage of the sinus passage ways infection can develop. It is important to visit with an ears nose and throat physician or otolaryngologist to evaluate your symptoms.

Upper respiratory infection: Probably a upper respiratory infection. The mucus you are producing is coming from the sinuses. For symptom relief you can use a saline nasal spray, and take a cold medicine that has a decongestant in it. If nasal stuffiness is intolerable, you could use a nasal spray like Afrin however when this medication wears off your nose will be stuffer then before you used it. You will need an antibiotic.

after i cleaned my ears out at home (hydrogen peroxide & water w/ a syringe) my left ear feels clogged. i tried the method where you plug your nose and blow/yawning/swallowing. my ear isnt hurting just feels clogged. should i try the syringe again?

: You can keep flushing the ear canal with warm water and peroxide.  Pieces of wax may float out.  After 2-4 cups of solution, try a warm shower and lie down.  Even after the plug is out, you may have the sensation for awhile.  if you have fever, pain, difficulty swallowing, please see your doctor and look for infection.

Viral vs. allergy: Allergy vs. Viral infection. Try loratidine and ask your healthcare provider if it's ok to use a decongestant such as Mucinex (guaifenesin) d and nosespray such as afrin for a few days. Do not use these last 2  longterm- but they may make it less likely that you'll end up on antibiotics. Neti- pot is a good idea too.

Chronic : Chronic tonsillitis can be quite bothersome.  Failure to respond to several courses of antibiotics might be an indication to have a tonsillectomy.  You might want to se an otolaryngolist, ear nose and throat specialist, for further evaluation.

You bet!: When your nose is stuffy, the tubes behind your ear drums [the eustachian tubes] can get stuffy too. This can lead to ear pain, muffled hearing & crackly/popping sounds. The same germs that cause the common cold can also cause middle ear infections. Drip-drip-dripping in the back of your throat can make your throat sore. It's all connected.

can a post nasal drip cause hearing loss? i have constant ringing and significant hearing loss in my left ear. ct scan came back normal. i was told i have a post nasal drip and i could have allergies?
