A : A ventral hernia occurs at the site of a previous incision which does not heal correctly, where the lining of the abdomen, the sheath around the abdominal muscles, fail to heal.  This leads to a weakness, which in general, will gradually increase due to the increased intra-abdominal pressure when one strains, or in some cases, due to build up of pressure within the abdominal cavity, such as seen with fluid build up, called ascites.

Not all ventral hernias need to be repaired, however in some cases, the discomfort associated with a hernia or trapping intestine within the hernia, causing strangulation, may necessitate repair.  There are several methods for repair, depending on the location and size of hernia.  In this case, your surgeon can provide more specific information about what approaches may apply in your case.

Hernia: Hernia extending into the scrotum near the testucke is not an early stage hernia. A large hernia extending into the scrotum should be surgically repaired. There is no other treatment other than surgery.

Varies: Tv really does vary.  It is not so much the "size" of the surgery that is important for long term good results in an incisional hernia repair as it is to have a good, strong repair that will make it less likely to recur.  Discuss your specific case with your surgeon.

Depends: Seroma is a fluid collection in the empty space where the hernia had been located. Seromas resolve over days or weeks. Depends on where the hernia was located and how large the hernia was, with larger hernias taking longer to heal. These fluid collections generally resolve on their own without additional intervention.

Highly unlikely: You should have the collection evaluated asap. See your surgeon and a ct scan or an MRI may be needed.

Probably ok: That's a long wait. It's ok if the hernia pops in and out. If pain however is limiting your activities, or you have increasing difficulty pushing it back in, call your surgeon and let them know the situation has changed, and become more urgent. It is hard to tell: It is hard to predict if it will go away.  Often they do not go away. See the surgeon or a urologist is it is painful or too big and bothers you. Usually they are not harmful.

Depends: It depends on what type of hernia and technique of repair and anesthesia. It also depends on whether or not you are taking narcotic pain medication. In general, wait until the anesthesia wears off, and you are no longer taking narcotic pain meds. Check with your surgeon to be sure. Hope this helps!
