i am 18 years old and i take modafinil three days a week at 50mg sublingual ,coffee for the rest 4 days, and omega 3 daily...i'm thinking of adding ginkgo biloba for it's cognitive benefits but afraid of the blood thinning effect, so is it okay?

: A brief comment:  several yrs ago, there was an extensive study from the Univ. of Pittsburgh Medical School, finding no significant or substantial cognitive value for Ginkgo Biloba.  So, save your money and do not search for "miracles" from Dr. Google!

Possibly: But you would have to take such a large quantity that you would likely stop taking it long before that would happen due to a fishy smell  from your sweat glands.

They lower trigs: They lower triglycerides.

Accepted Answer

Doubt it: I have never heard of omega 3s causing high blood pressure. Fish oil seems to produce modest reductions in blood pressure in people with high bp. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil seem to be able to expand blood vessels, and this brings blood pressure down.  If you have elevated bp,  talk to your health care provider to explore other contributing factors. I don't think it is omega 3s.

May be.: No direct studies done, but Omega 3 has some anticoagulant properties, so we recommend patients to stop taking Omega 3 before surgical procedures and even before taking Botox injections. They are not as potent as Apirin.

These medications: should not affect your blood pressure or pulse.

Eat fish or liquid: The best way to get omega 3's is to eat the fish rich in them such as wild salmon or sardines at least 3x/week. But you can  also take fish oil as a liquid such as cod liver oil. Mostly aspirin: One article in AAFP journal sites:"Omega-3 fatty acids exert a dose-related effect on bleeding time; however, there are no documented cases of abnormal bleeding as a result of fish oil supplementation, even at high dosages and in combination with other anticoagulant medications." i went to a pharmacy and asked what was better for memory between lecithin,omega 3 and ginko. the lady there gave me all 3 of them, but i just read that omega 3 and ginko are blood thinners. is it safe to take them throughout the day?

: Omega3,Vitamin B12 and ginko is good for memory.I have recommended this for my patients and this has proven to be good for them.

is it possible taking omega 3 capsules could slow a fracture healing because of thinning the blood?

Not likely . . .: I just did a quick search & couldn't find any peer-reviewed published data that fish (oil) would slow fracture healing. More recent studies suggest that fish oil doesn't thin blood enough to be problematic for most (i didn't say all) surgeons or procedures. Best to chat w/your orthopedic surgeon. One review (http://www.Ncbi.Nlm.Nih.Gov/pmc/articles/pmc3259713/) suggests that nsaids might slow heal.
