i get bad nosebleeds, often lasting 45 min. if i take ibuprofen. i'll be blowing bloody mucus the rest of the day. is excedrin safe?

Avoid excedrin: There may be several formulations of Excedrin, but most of them contain aspirin -- which is even worse for bleeding than ibuprofen or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Use only acetaminophen (Tylenol and many drugstore brands) for pain relief. Discuss with your doctor -- maybe referral to ENT? Or test for blood clotting disorder?

dx mild type1 vonwillebrand. had a cold for past week &took ibuprofen until 2 days ago. past several days everytime i blow nose there is fresh red blood in mucus. not having "nosebleeds" where blood comes out spontaneously though. this ok or see doc?

Stop Ibuprofen: You already have a predelection to bleed easily, why increase the risk with Ibuprofen?  The blood you are seeing is a good indicator of that. The ibuprofen effect on your platelets will decline over the next 5 days if you stop now.

i have had nosebleed problems for 1 year in same nostril.  today i took advil for a headache, and later on my nose bled.  connection?

ENT needed: Repeated nosebleed from one nostril suggests an injured or abnormal (hemangioma) blood vessel or another problem (infection, tumor).  A careful exam of the nose by a specialist (ENT) should be done.  Aspirin, Advil, and related agents increase risk of bleeding, stopping them may help, but exam still needed

for 3 years ive been prone to getting nosebleeds. always the same nostril, usually 1 every month or two.  is it ok to take 200mg of advil when i get headaches?  im afraid itll cause a profuse and dangerous nosebleed.  am i worrying too much?

Nosebleed: A dose of Advil will unlikely be harmful. However, recurrent nose bleeds should be checked into. Allergies, poly or some type of ulcer possible. If lyou have not been seen I would recommend evaluation.

can i take vicodin 5/500 n ibuprofen 800  together?

Accepted Answer

Yes: The medicine in vicodin works on different pain receptors than ibuprofen.  In addition,  Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory where vicodin is not.

Status migrainous: this may be status migranous (if classic migraine features are present) and when it persists and escalates for days, it may require IV treatment in ER or urgent care with more potent medications (ex: Toradol) to get aborted. by now its unlikely triptan class abortive (ex:imitrex,zomig) would work. in the interim try naproxen as it is longer acting.

Yes: Medications like ibuprofen in combination with physical therapy are the main treatments for musculoskeletal back pain, and have been shown to prevent recurrences and shorten the duration of recurrences.

Nosebleed: Stop aspirin and ibuprofen if taking. No nose blowing or picking. Use ice pack and/or pinching pressure for ten minutes if rebreeds. See ENT. Can apply antibiotic ointment gently  to inside of nose with q-tip to keep area from drying out

Genetics: Most epistaxis are hereditary esp. In children and young adults. Count your blessings!

what causes nosebleeds?

Accepted Answer

Many possibilities: The most common source of a nose bleed is from the front/ bottom part of the nasal septum.  
This is a vascular area and some people have prominent blood vessels in this area. The blood vessels may break with a nose blow, dryness, or picking at this area.  But there are other more serious causes such as hypertension, growth and even a malignancy.  See an ENT doctor.
