Contracted toe: The most common cause of a dropped metatarsal is a contracted ( hammered) toe.  If the metatarsal pad helps it can be made permanent by incorporating it into an insert.  The condition can also be corrected surgically.  Discuss this with your podiatrist.

10 – 12 weeks: Fifth metatarsal base fractures are very common. Bone healing is common in 10 to 12 weeks. On occasion, there is an asymptomatic fibrous union – the fracture line is still apparent on x-rays though there is no pain. Fifth metatarsal shaft fractures (jones fractures) are associated with delayed healing and sometimes nonunion. These can require open treatment with bone grafting ; internal fixation.

Never a guarantee: If the bone re-growth is causing pain and interfering with normal function, then you should go ahead.  However, with your history of an inflammatory arthritis like psoriatic arthritis, there is no guarantee that a re-growth can be avoided.

Fracture: It rare but possible to have a 5th metatarsal sesamoid 4.7% according to one article. I suggest you get an MRI to check if the sesamoid is fractured vs a possible pathology in the surrounding tissues or joint. Physical therapy is one option at this point.

Not fractured?: What happened?  If it is a stress fracture then it is fractured.  It will take 8-16 weeks to heal.  Sounds like you need to be reevaluated.  See your doctor (Foot Doctor).

I : I would say it all depends on the fracture.  Most fractures of the 5th metatarsal occur at the base of the bone as a result of an inversion type injury (where you twist your ankle inward).  A tendon (peroneus brevis) ataches to the base of the 5th metatarsal, and with such a mechanism of injury, the tendon yanks a piece of bone off the base of the metatarsal.  This is actually the single most common foot fracture.

Most of the time, the bone is nicely aligned, and only a cast is needed to heal properly.

If the bone fragments are displaced, then surgery is necessary to put them back into alignment, and then some sort of internal fixation, like pins or a screw, is used to keep the bone fragments together so they can heal.

So if the fracture you have is displaced, surgery is probably the way to go.  But if they are not displaced, a simple cast will do it.

It's important for patients to have trust in their doctor.  If, for any reason, you feel some doubt, by all means, get another opinion.  It has always been by feeling that any doctor who gets insulted by their patient requesting a second opinion is not a doctor worth going to in the first place.  The whole concept here is about you, and getting better.  Egos and especially money shouldn't be playing any role in you getting the best care.

Cast or boot & rest: Most mildly displaced to nondisplaced traumatic or stress fractures of the metatarsals heal well without the need for surgery. There are a few exceptions, including a specific fracture of the 5th metatarsal called a jones fracture. A boot walker or a cast are often used for treatment, and typical healing occurs in approximately 6 weeks. Crutches may also be used with the cast or boot.

Follow MD's guidance: Definitely discuss what is activities are safe or not for your particular surgery with your surgeon. In general, most healthy bones heal in about 6-8 weeks. Eating healthy and doing your prescribed rehabilitation will help strengthen your healing bone after surgery.

Heloma: This is a term usually used to refer to the dead skin build up on the joints of the toes  at the top of the joint or dorsum.   A tyloma is the callous formed  on the bottom or plantar aspect  of the metatarsal head (s) .   There is seldom a  callous formed at the dorsum ( top ) of the lesser  metatarsal head (s) .
