BCP and thyroid: BCP do not worsen thyroid problems.  Presumably you are taking levothyroxine for your hypothyroidism.  BCP increases the amount of thyroid binding protein in the blood.  In some of the older blood tests, this altered some of the values, but if a TSH or FT4 is measured, there is no problem with interpretation of lab values.

does a thyroid level in the tsh 4.1 to 5.2 range indicate hypothyroidism?  is very dry skin and increase in acne also a symptom?

Accepted Answer

Possibly: A TSH of 4.1-5.2 is mildly high.  Most people with these  levels will still have a normal thyroid level (free t4), and have no symptoms.  We call that subclinical hypothyroidism.  There are, however, some people who are sensitive to even mildly abnormal levels, and have symptoms.  Dry skin is a very common complaint, that may or may not be related.  Acne is usually associated with high thyroid.

Possibly: Progesterone has been shown to increase thyroid hormone levels and this lowers TSH. High levels of progesterone can cause cystic acne. Actually low thyroid levels are more apt to cause acne but high progesterone may override the low thyroid status. I hope I didn't confuse you.

Elevated TSH?: If your TSH is elevated then you have hypothyroidism. This abnormality may also make acne worse. Please discuss with your doctor as you probably need to go back on your levothyroxine.

Rare adverse event: In few susceptible patients minocycline can trigger the immune system &amp; cause "drug induced autoimmune disease". Minocycline remains a safe drug but you need to be ware of these very rare side effects. Best wishes

Have you: Have you had  dheas level also?  May be you should stop and see if it clears. This happens sometime.

i have dry eyes and take restasis for that and i had a big dose of rai for thyroid cancer can i take accutane to treat acne since it cause dry eyes to?

Speak to your dr 1st: You are also taking doxycycline, cytomel, (liothyronine) levothyroxine, and before you add any more, do discuss this with your doctor, and eye specialist. So, you are all on board as to what is best to do. You are taking restasis, and Doxycycline that helps with dry eyes, but there are other side effects, and drug interactions with Accutane that  you must go over before adding anything else to your regimen.

50 mg spironolactone (for hormonal acne) caused diffuse hair loss for me for last 5 months. thyroid/iron/autoimmune/etc. labs all normal. will this resolve without stopping the med? how long could it take? would a change in dosage maybe help?

Hair loss: Spironolactone, being antiandrogenic, actually is used to treat female pattern hair loss. Your hair loss may be genetically determined. Any other female relatives with hair thinning pattern? For further evaluation a dermatologist may be able to pinpoint the type of hair loss you have and determine whether hair regrowth may be likely.
