See a physician: If you have an infection from attempting to self treat an ingrown toenail, it is time to see a physician. Infections need to be properly managed and if not can result in some serious problems (even from ingrowns!) that range from sepsis (infection of the blood) to osteomyelitis (infection of the bone) both of which have serious consequences. A foot specialist can also be able to help that toenail!

Make appointment: Ingrown toenails and other minor toe wounds and infections are a leading cause of limb amputations. Sounds crazy and dramatic, but the underlying vascular disease is the reason. In order to heal any wound you need extra blood flow. If you have vascular disease, you won't get that extra flow and your wound won't heal. Go see your doctor, ask for an artery ultrasound and referral to vascular.

Depends.: As an ingrown toenail becomes worse, it will set off the body's inflammatory response to it. Redness, swelling and pain will start. The granulation is in response to the increased tissue irritation caused by the ingrowing nail. The tissue may or may not become infected as bacteria is allowed to enter the tissue. Clearing the infection may not be enough to resolve this issue. See a specialist.

Have it evaluated.: Ingrown toenails can be temporarily remedied through soaking your foot in warm water, removal of embedded debris from the nail borders, and applying an antibiotic ointment to temporarily soften the corners.  If you have continued pain, redness or drainage, get it looked at by a professional as you may need to have the ingrown nail border removed and you may need antibiotics.

See Podiatrist: While soaking may help a liitle, you need to see a podiatrist immediately. Ningrown portion of nail must be cut out and antibiotic probably necessary. The longer you wait, the worse it will get.
