Dry : Dry eyes can be caused by numerous things. A complete eye exam is necessary to determine the causes. Usually artificial tears, lid hygiene, and even changing the type of contact lenses may help reduce your eye irritation. Contacts made out of material allowing good flow of oxygen to the surface of the eye is highly recommended.

Also, if all the above fails, consider placing punctal plugs in your eye to reduce dry eye symptoms.

i wear soft contacts. are artificial tears safe to use or should i use rewetting drops only?

Contact comfort: All eye drops while wearing contacts are to be avoided unless specifically labelled to be used in that fashion. Eye comfort drops for contact wearers would be ok, .

Yes: You should use the ones that are labelled "for use with contact lenses.".

is it possible for me to put sterile artificial tears on my eyes if i have contacts?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Many patients do. It helps offset the drying effect contact lenses have on the eyes. Preservative free tears are best, but make sure to use all 8 drops in the tube within 24 hours so that bacteria don't grow in the non-preserved drops. There are also other drops made for wetting contact lenses.

Tired, Dry Eye: Dry eye is common. Trick is to rejuvenate tear film (has 3parts) apply heat to eyelids without burning your skin (hot towel in hot water; avoid pushing on eye); re-heating when towel gets cold (like hot towel push ups), it will open the meibomian gland and use artificial tears 4x/day.  Headaches: med side effects; dehydration; gluten senstitivity, etc; see eyedoc2020.Blogspot.Com.

Dry eye: Tears naturale (artificial tears) is safe for the eyes.  They can be used every 1 to 2 hours for dry eye, if needed.  Remember to take frequent breaks when using the computer for long periods of time.  Alternate choices include systane and theratears.

Eye strain:  I recognize that lots of screen time can strain eyes BUT when was your last eye exam?  If you have any visual issues that could compound the issue.

Eye lubrication: Lacrilube (artificial tears) is a purified petrolatum which is certified for use on the eye.  It is use to lubricate the eye, especially in cases of eye dryness more than the average and is used in hospitals to protect the eyes in situations where the eyes might dry out.  It is a brand name, and there are a number of equivalent over the counter products with the same effect.

Dryness: Tears naturale (artificial tears) is the brand name of a popular eye lubricant.  If your problem is only eye dryness and your ophthalmologist has eliminated other causes, then this is an excellent lubricant available over the counter.

is systane ultra (ud) the same as artificial tears?

Accepted Answer

A variant: Systane is a slightly thicker tear replacement which I call syrupy.  It will cling to the eye a little longer, providing more lengthy relief than ordinary tear replacements.  So commonly it is used less often although in extremely dry eyes the  schedule is very frequent.
