is it really bad to use cotton swabs to clean your nose and ears?

Yes  for ears: You should avoid using them in your ears because if you go in to far you can perforate your ear drum. You may also make the wax more impacted.

Xylitol: Xylitol is a natural sugar and breaks up biofilm in the body.  That's where germs mulitply.  It is found in a nasal spray called xlear (pronounced "clear") and in chewing gum called spry.  Pleasant tasting too!

Eustachian tube dysf: At your age, its likely congestion in the back of your nose or even middle-ear fluid. When its just one-sided it should be seen by a doctor to make sure there is no growth but otherwise, you may try some anti-histamine and decongestant to see if your ear fullness resolves. If not or gets acutely worse, you will need to see your doctor.

can you use the neimed sinus rinse on my ears as well as my nose?

Bad idea: Using a sinus rinse to clean ears would be a bad idea.  If you are having a problem with ear wax  ask your pharmacist for otc options. Sinus rinses are great for cleaning out the nasal cavity and washing allergens out the nose.

Eustachian tubes: Eustachian tubes close up and don't want to open.  Ask a pilot for the ways they get their Eustachian tubes open - they can show you easier than tell you.  If unable to open, then see the Doctor.

is use of otrivin (.05%) nose drops in infants helpful in avoiding ear pain when flying?

Possibly: Otrivin (xylometazoline) is a decongestant that will shrink clogged nasal passages. if there is no cold or facial congestion, it will not have much effect. Swallowing helps open the passageways and clear the ears, so a good way to help your infant avoid ear pain is to make sure he's hungry by the time the airplane descends, and continuously feed from a bottle during descent.

my son age 8 years, suffer blocked ears and stuffy nose in winters,which effects his hearing abit.we use steam and antihistamine at night.
any precious advice to prevent and cure this,and to avoid being worse.

Depends: If you have a nasal steroid available it may help with irritant or allergic issues better than the antihistamine. Sometimes antihistamines thicken mucus &amp; may aggravate middle ear mucus retention/poor hearing. The steam may help if the humidity is dry during that season.

good morning doctors! a dermatology question. is it safe to use nolix for seborrheic dermatitis on your face, by the lobes of the nose and behind the ears?

Nolix: Nolix is a medium strength corticosteroid cream or ointment, and as such is to be used on the face only if your physician or dermatologist recommends it. Otherwise try a mild nonprescription corticosteroid product that your pharmacist can recommend. You can also try coconut oil or aloe vera gel for your seborrheic dermatitis.
