Nasal sprays: The most effective treatment for allergic rhinitis (hay fever) are the nasal steroid sprays such as qnasl, nasonex, (mometasone) flonase, veramyst, etc.  They are safe and Nasonex (mometasone) is approved down to age 2 years. While it takes a couple of days to see improvement, they are well worth it.

Nasal congestion: If you're troubled by nasal congestion from hay fever or other allergies and don't want the systemic effects of decongestants or antihistamines, try nasal sprays such as flonase and Afrin. Discuss this with your physician or see whether your pharmacist can recommend OTC nasal sprays for you to try.

The runny nose and congestion are caused by chemical mediators like histamine or leukotrienes. So taking antihistamines like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and loratidine (claritin) help block the chemical mediators your body produces and helps stop the symptoms. Nasal sine, decongestants, steriid nose prays can help as well.

Allergy: You can irrigate the nose with saline by taking one teaspoon of salt to one quart of water. 50 cc each nostril 4 to 5 times a day will help. Gargle with warm salt water 2 to 3 tsp of salt to one qt of water. Same frequency. Take vitamin c as well. 1 gram a day. Good luck and feel better.

You can, but...: You are unlikely to receive significant additional benefit from increasing the dose of loratadine in a case like this. Antihistamines are often inadequate to control the inflammation associated with moderate rhinitis.  Furthermore, loratadine can take hours to reach its full effect.
