About an hour: Point of care test may be available in a matter of minutes.  Test done in the main lab takes about and hour.  However, it usually takes longer for the results to get back to the ordering doctor due to time taken for blood collection, transportation to the lab, processing in the lab, recording of results. Retesting in a limited number of cases etc.

Unless your doctor: specifically tells you otherwise, you should take your medication exactly as prescribed just as you do on a daily basis.  Your doctor wants to know how things are going in general, not just on this specific day.  If you're supposed to be fasting, swallow it down with plain water.  After your blood work is drawn, you should have a snack or normal meal to avoid LOW blood sugar.  Dr. Anne

i do take metformin (500) twice a day, and i eat "fair" - do you think that i should be taking a statin to lower cholesterol?
i went from an overall 220 to 270 number over the last year. my fasting bg is anywhere from 90 to 120, and my last a1c test came in at 6.4

Need more info: How much do you weigh? How tall are you? What is your blood pressure? You may need statins, but you need to consult your doctor about losing weight, increasing physical activity and diet modification. It is good that you are controlling your blood glucose.

: Hba1c was very reassuring. Pregnancy is a state of high insulin resistance. Take the glucose tolerance test in a timely fashion. Eat healthy regularly , exercise and stay active. Good luck.

It is far less variable than daily blood glucose checks, which are affected easily by food, lack of food, no exercise, heavy exercise, infection, etc. It also more accurately depicts long-term control, especially in those who might follow the proper regimen just before seeing the doctor.

3-4 mths: This test is measuring the amount of glucose bound to the red blood cell.  Since the red blood cells live approximately 4 months repeating this test every 3-4 months is appropriate to monitor how well you are controlling your blood sugars.
