Try Miralax (polyethylene glycol): Try MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) with the clear flavored gatorade. It may make it easier for you. Usually, each dose of MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) equals 25% of a bowel prep. So however much you didn't complete with your bowel prep - substitute one dose of MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) for each 1/4 of the prep.

Laxatives: There are a variety of materials used to clean out the colon before colonoscopy because if there is stool in the colon it will be difficult if not impossible to have a successful examination.  Different doctors have different ways of doing this.

is it possible for me to take a decongestant with claritand?

Accepted Answer

Yes: They do different things.  An antihistamine, like Claritin should help block the release of histamine from mast cells, decreasing mucous production.  Decongestants cause swelling and congestion to decrease inside the nose. These are complimentary medicines and are often prescribed together for significant relief of congested runny nose associated with allergies, colds and even nasal infections.

The AAP states...: The american academy of pediatrics has recently announced that under the age of 6 years old decongestants and cough medications have not been proven effective. Having said that, your pediatrician could more clearly advise you as to exactly what measures should be used if your 3 year old has a cold or allergy that is triggering the congestion in question. Most suggest nasal saline and mild suction.

About 40 minutes: An UGI endoscopy usually takes 10 min while a colonoscopy wihtout polypectomy or other procedure, usually takes about 30 minutes.

Varies: Depending on your normal bowel function and the foods you consume after your test, many people resume normal bowel movements the next day.

Usual medications: Nothing special needs to be taken after these procedures unless directed by your doctor.  You can resume your usual medication unless you are taking aspirin and had a polyp removed or biopsy performed.  If so you should wait a week after the procedure before resuming the aspirin.

is it ok to take cold medicine just for the decongestant effects?

Yes, but...: ...You never want to take more medication than you need. The other ingredients will likely not be harmful, but cough suppressants and antihistamines can make you tired and slow your reflexes, and the pain relievers can hurt your liver if you're also taking other pain relievers that will add to your total dose. Decongestants alone are also available from your pharmacist without a prescription.
