i have an inguinal hernia, aches a bit, no pain, bulge the size of an egg & disappears when i lay down.  it will need an operation. can i still play golf, run and do floor core exercise before the op please?  i am 54, very fit/active, do cardio daily

Enjoy golf: The real danger would be something that would get trapped in the hernia. This is,unlikely in your situation. You,could tape it down if concerned until you get it corrected, if desired. Speak with your surgeon regarding other do and dont’s. Good,luck

Exertional force.: I some particular sports you tend to over exert yourself with force.  I done too hard your hernia can become incarcerated suddenly, leading to possible strangulation of the hernia, leading to emergent and often terrible consequences from this type of surgery.  Don't want your intestines to rupture within this hernia, which could happen with an incarceration which leads into a strangulation.

Yes, if: it causes no pain, assuming it is not massive.  If you develop pain, this is sign of incarceration, so you should stop whatever you are doing, lie down, and try to reduce it.  Then see a surgeon for surgical repair.  Hernia truss is of limited value.

Your risk tolerance: If you opt out of a recommended treatment, the rest of your life is at your discretion. The risk is if the hernia is "out" (bulge present), then area gets impacted/strained causing swelling or change that prevents return, is a risk it can become "strangulated" and pose a surgical emergency. Not a huge risk if use hockey gear/pads, but still possible.

Yes, you can: Was your diagnosis a result of particular complain of pain or incidental finding? If it's just a small hernia you can probably go about your normal activities without limitations for now. I would strongly recommend to be evaluated by the surgeon and have it repaired sooner when it's still small and you are healthy rather then wait until it's bigger and you are older and possibly less healthy.

what do i do if my groin hernia keeps popping out?

Push it back: You have a defect in the fibromuscular wall of your abdominal cavity.  Your intestine is pushing its way into the opening and you can push it back inside.  Eventually you will need this fixed as there is a small risk of strangulation or twisting of the intestine doing this.  Surgery will close the defect and prevent the protrusion.
