is it safe to pop a dental abscess by myself?

No: A dental abscess usually involves the apex or root of the tooth.  It requires a dentist to drill through the tooth to drain the abscess and relieve the built up pressure. A root canal or dental extraction is then usually needed.

If : If your infection has been treated and then the abcess has returned, you need to go back to the dentist who is treating you so that he/she can evaluate your condition.

It is possible that you need additional antibiotics to clear up your infection and allow your dentist to treat your problematic tooth.

Call your dentist: Try to have your appointment moved up or at least be put on antibiotics to help control the infection.

No: You may risk spreading the infection if you pop the abscess.  Let the Amoxicillin work for a couple of days first.  If it is still present and painful then your healthcare provider can perform an incision and drainage for you.

1) you can perform a root canal on yourself or, 
2) you can pull the offending tooth

i do not recommend either option ;-).
