can i have a multifocal lens implanted later if i decide to have a monofocal lens implanted now?

Accepted Answer

Yes: The short answer is yes you can, but i wouldn't recommend it. Once you've had an intraocular lens implant implanted it's possible to remove it and "exchange" it with another implant, say a multifocal implant but there are definite risks with "exchanging" a lens implant. It's best to choose a multifocal implant now, if you believe you want one instead of a monofocal implant.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Just like with any cataract surgery procedure, there are risks associated with the surgery such as infection, bleeding, pain and loss of vision. With multifocal implants these risks are no different. In addition to these risks there are common issues with these implants such as "halos" around lights or neon signs at night. This is usually an issue with the nonaccomodating implants.

can i be implanted with a multifocal lens in one eye only?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Yes you can, but it's better to have both eyes implanted with multifocal implants so you can get the full benefit of the "reading" aspect of the implants. When you have both eyes implanted with the multifocal implants you will have the "depth" perception benefit from the binocular vision.

Prices vary: Multifocal lenses do cost extra and are not covered by health insurance. They are not mandatory but can be very helpful if you are trying to achieve independence from glasses. The price is a combination of surgeon fees and the cost of the lens. The price is dependent on the market in the area and is variable. There's nothing wrong with price shopping.  Just make sure you go with a great surgeon..

Try looking online: Years ago, listings used to be available only in printed form. By the turn of the century, lists had become available online everywhere. Now, some lists are only online, and no longer printed. County medical societies (or other local societies), hospitals, insurance companies usually list doctors by name, specialty, location. You might call some ophthalmologists and ask about your specific needs.

Depends: Are you comfortable with the far and near vision with your lens?   Is your major complaint the halos?  If your basic vision is fine, you should do nothing.  If the haloes interfere with your life then consider treatment with pilocarpine to diminish the haloes .  Discuss this with the surgeon who implanted your lens.  IOL exchange is a serious decision and should be only a last resort.

Lens shifting: This is not a common problem if the surgery was performed correctly and no complications occurred.  Correcting the lens shift should not take long although the lens may need to be sutured and a vitrectomy may be required.

ICL : Icl surgery is superb for correcting nearsightedness without resorting to lasik surgery.  There is no reshaping of the cornea as with laser surgery and the lens can be removed if there are significant changes in your vision in the future allowing for another type of treatment.  It is a great treatment particularly for those who are too nearsightedness for lasik treatment.

if being aphakic from congenital cataract puts me at risk of eye problems, why not just implant lenses now? i'm 41, have been aphakic since 1 year old

Aphakic: Discuss with your Dr over there. Need much more detail  to be able to help.

Accepted Answer

Bifocal substitute: These are eyeglass lenses with a continuous grind so no line is visible.  They offer a large distance and near area for correction and a narrower central band of intermediate clarity.  They cost a little more but offer a cosmetic and sometimes optical advantage for those in the presbyopic age.
