Not usually: Hypothyroidism just means your thyroid gland is not making as much hormone as it should. However, hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most common cause -- and it does have an associated increased risk for developing a thyroid gland lymphoma -- but it is still very uncommon.

NOT NECESSARILY: Hypothyroidism itself may not put one more prone to thyroid ca but that does not mean that an individual with hypo- thyroidism will never get a thyroid ca at all because one does not know what other factors (genetic, environmental, dietary, immunity etc.) will play role in developing that thyroid ca.  On the other hand, hyperthyroidism, when teated with i-131 may put one more prone to thyroid ca.

Depends: Most of the time, thyroid cancer does not change thyroid function.  However, after being treated for thyroid cancer, you will be hypothyroid if your thyroid gland is removed.

Hashimoto's you have: You had become hypothyroid because you have hashimoto's thyroiditis, which was confirmed by the elevated thyroglobulin activity.  You should not worry about lupus, or other conditions such as cancer.  The strongest association with hashimoto's and another autoimmune problem is psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

You : You can rest assured that thyroid cancer does not cause this. There are several possible reasons for the TSH to go up, but none are thyroid cancer. Reasons for the TSH going up could be:  1) your thyroid is getting more underactive which sometimes happens in people with hashimoto's thyroiditis 2) you have gained weight 3) you having started taking antacids 4) you have started taking the thyroid pills at the same time you take calcium, iron, or magnesium containing substances, 5) you have started taking the thyroid pills with food 6) the pharmacy has made an error in prescribing 7) you have developed a benign growth on the pituitary gland which is producing too much thyroid hormone (this is extremely rare).

my dad 70 years had high tsh 54 , low t4 0.4 and enlarged thyroid for 4 years. he has taken eltroxin since then . can this turn into thyroid cancer?

Unlikely: Goiters due to hypothyroid conditions are benign and should settle down once replacement thyroxine has been used to control the problem. Cancer is rarely a concern in this situation, yet if the thyroid enlargement is substantial then you should consult an ENT doctor who deals with thyroid enlargements(or seek an endocrinologist 's opinion).

Examination: Suspicion for a thyroid cancer is often discovered by a physical examination, first discovered by a patient and then verified by a doctor.  A biopsy is needed which can confirm the diagnosis.

Thyroid cancer: Patient may die of thyroid cancer  if it spread to the lymph nodes and other organs.

what is anaplastic thyroid cancer?

Aggressive: Be sure the diagnosis is made by at least two pathologists who agree.  Anaplastic thyroid cancer / carcinoma is an aggressive disease with no known risk factors (except perhaps a tiny pre-existing low-grade tumor too small to feel).  It seems to strike adults at random and is not one of those cancers that are easy to treat.
