Prescription: See your doctor to see if you are a candidate for medical therapy with something like actigall (ursodiol). Medications can take a few years to dissolve gallstones, does not work well for larger stones, and it does not work at all for calcified gallstones. Gallstones can also grow back unless you have surgery to remove the gallbladder & gallstones.

If you are dead-set against gallbladder removal, or have medical contraindications to the surgery, then stone dissolution therapy is an option. Can use oral cheno or urso (synthetic bear bile) which is costly and works about 1/2 the time over 6 months (poor candidates have calcified stones), or direct infusion of mtbe into the biliary tree.

Home remedies like olive oil and lemon juice elixir do not work. It's best to ignore gallstones until they become symptomatic, when laparoscopic cholecystectomy, a generally safe procedure, is recommended. Good luck.

You can't: There are all sorts of old wives tale remedies out there for gallbladder stone, but science shows that once a patient has symptoms from gallstones, these symptoms are very likely to recur until the gallbladder is removed. Delaying surgery makes surgery more difficult and risks/complications higher.  Stones leaving the gallbladder don't just cause pain.  They can damage pancreas and cause infection.

Yes and Yes: To both questions. Unfortunately, the medication does not dissolve all gallstones and the stones recur when the medication is discontinued. It is possible to remove the gallstones and leave in the gallbladder but this is just a setup for forming more stones. Leaving a chronically inflamed gallbladder in place can also cause other problems down the line.

Not likely: Gallstones usually are in the gallbladder, and are not exposed to stomach acid.  If a gallstone made its way out of the gallbladder and into the intestine, and there is no sign of blockage from the stone, it likely passed out of your body through the stool.

If symptomatic: Gallstones not causing any symptoms, such as being found incidentally during an abdominal ultrasound or ct performed for an other reason usually do not require surgery. On the other hand, gallstone pain is a very strong indication for cholecystectomy (surgical removal of gallbladder) which nowadays is invariably performed laparoscopically.
