Talk w/pediatrician: Please discuss this with your pediatrician.  Your baby may not be ready to wean yet -- 6 weeks is very young.  Or, she may be intolerant of some of the ingredients in the formula.  There are many to choose from.  Incidence of adverse events in infants exposed to benzodiazepines (like xanax) in breast milk, is low -- not zero, but low.  Your bonding together is also very important.

Very overweight!!: At 13m old, a baby should be eating 3 meals, 2 snacks daily and drinking milk (500ml daily). The milk should be given only after they eat and in a sippy cup. A normal weight for a 13 m old is 8-12kg.  16.9 kg is extremely overweight for 13 months old. See your Dr for a thorough exam/lab tests, and proper nutrition for your baby. No: Do not give your four month old baby any formula that is not made according to the manufacturer's instructions! This is important

Not bad: Breastfeeding is best, of course, but there are reasons for supplementing with formula depending upon your personal situation.  If you are concerned about your baby being "constipated" its best to contact your pediatrician. What you perceive as constipation may actually be "normal".

Evaluation: The baby may not be receiving enough formula and the constipation may be secondary to dehydration. Provide feeds more often eg every two hours, feed slowly at an angle and discuss thickened feeds and medication with your pediatrician. Other causes such as pyloric stenosis should be considered.

Constipation: Most babies will strain a little. As long as the fussiness is just with the BM, and baby is going once a day. Clay consistency is a bit more formed than average, for 5 weeks. Call your pediatrician for some recommendations to soften it up.

Safe or advised ?: Many infants grew up with early (weeks) solid feeds decades ago when families didn't breast feed &amp; made their own formula. Today with breast feeding &amp; balanced formulas we prefer to wait until they sit &amp; the tongue thrust fades ~ 6 mo. BM or formula has all the fluid they need.

Wrong Statement:: I think, your statement is over exaggerated. In reality it doesn't happen. Anyways, take your child to his pediatrician and explain in front! diarrhea can be instant by definition, constipation is not.

Define constipation?: The average breastfed baby can go a smear every feed or a diaper full once a week. If it is soft when they go it is not constipation. The best formula is the one baby thrives on. There are some differences depending on the babies individual needs. If the kid is pushing out rabbit pellets or harder stools, 1-3 oz of full strength prune juice 1-3X/d gets most moving within 3-4 days.

No: Regular milk (cows milk) will make her more constipated. Try using probiotics like floras for or culturelle. Look at her diet as well. Pitted fruits like apricots, nectarines, plums are good esp if dried. You can soak it in water for about 15 min then blend it  with other things she may like. There's a new formula from end amok called reguline as your pediatrician about it
