can an improperly placed flu shot cause arm or shoulder pain for several weeks after the injection? have had upper arm/shoulder discomfort w/certain movements ever since my flu shot and haven't done anything out of the ordinary to cause the soreness?

Unusual: Flu shot pain should be gone within a few days.  Hard to understand how it got complicated.  Might wonder about local bleeding/ bruising, or even infection/ abscess.  Contact source of injection and discuss your concerns,

Yes but . . .: Poorly controlled diabetes can lead to nerve damage than can result in peripheral (diabetic) neuropathy which is often described as burning, numb, tingling, icy cold pain. But diabetes also increases risk for heart disease, even (silent) heart attacks which can sometimes present as heartburn with arm pain. If you're having shortness of breath, sweating, heartburn w/arm & hand pain, call 911 now.

Hard to know: If only on one side, then the problem is usually due to compression of blood vessels or nerves.  In rare cases, this could be related to blood clot in the arm or inflammatory disease affecting nerves or blood vessels (vasculitis, mononeuritis multiplex, or others). An examination is required to further differentiate potential causes.

Is it nerve pain?: The first thing to do is figure out where the pain is - soft tissues, bone, joint, nerve pain that radiates through the whole arm? With that information it's easier to figure out the source of the pain. It's not uncommon for a person in her 40s to have nerve impingement. It could be a minor irritation or the start of something more serious. It's best to have a doctor evaluate you.

? bone bruise?: You may have a small bruise under the lining around the bone (periosteum), which can ache for several days. Advil (ibuprofen) and/or cold compresses should help with discomfort. If persists beyond 7-10 days, should get it checked by your dr / urgent care / orthopedist, but will likely resolve in few days.

See your doc: difficult to say what the cause is without additional hx and time sequence of lesion and pain. Suggest you see your doc for further eval and possible tx, esp if problem has been going on for a few weeks or more.

Inflammation: Injury or overuse can cause inflammation of muscle and or tendons. Inflammation can present in a variety of ways ranging from sharp to dull achy pain. Local inflammatory mediators (special natural cell manufactured substances in our bodies)  released by the injured structures causes the inflammation and subsequent sypmtoms described by you.
