5y/o son having fainting spells. not related to dehydration or heat exhaustion.blood work, ekg and echo cardiogram came back good.what could be wrong?

Syncope: This is not normal, especially in a five year old.  Please see a pediatric cardiologist and neurologist.

can you get heatstroke or heat exhaustion from a 20-min. walk in 90+ degree temperatures? i took a short walk, and didn't think i was dehydrated, but started feeling headachy into the next day, but with no other symptoms?

: It does depend on your physical condition and your tolerance for heat/humidity with activity as well as how strenuous the activity is. If you are going to be out in the heat/humidity walking, you should have a water bottle with you and continue to drink throughout your walk. Also, limit your time outside and slow your speed of walking. These steps should help prevent this from happening again.

how is it possible that many people having heat exhaustion have normal body temperature? isn't the cause of this illness being unable to cool down?

Accepted Answer

: Heavy sweating keeps temperature down, but as time goes on with heat exhaustion it rises and leads to heat stroke when body temperature reaches 104 degrees. If you dress heavy, drink alcohol, are obese, and are on certain medications, you won't be able to cool down.

: Diarrhea is usually from something in food. Suggest rest, stay on clear fluids for a day and you will recover. If not see your MD

: Yes it can. Stay cool and hydrated. If not better in a day or two get a check up.

: Heat exhaustion with its loss of fluids and electrolytes can predispose to cardiac arrhythmias. In your age bracket I recommend a treadmill stress test when there has been a fainting episode I can't fully explain.

Stay hydrated.: Drink plenty of water when it is hot and you are going to engage in strenuous activity.  We all should drink at least two quarts per day not exercising or being in the heat.  You will need more if excersing, especially in the heat.  First axiom of exercising and hydration. Drink before you feel thirsty. Once deydrated, the GI tract cannot absorb water fast enough!

Basically yes.: Heat exhaustion occurs when a person exercises or works in a hot environment and sweating cannot dissipate the heat generated within the body. Often dehydration occurs because the person hasn't replaced the water lost by sweating.

Accepted Answer

Sun stroke: Heat exhaustion implies core body temp <104 f while heat stroke includes core temp >104 f.  Heat stroke causes delirium or coma and can cause organ failure (kidney, liver, heart), muscle cell injury, and can cause death. Both make you feel bad (usually nausea, vomiting, headache, weakness) but heat exhaustion alone won't kill you.

Rest, fluid, cooling: Typically occurs because of extrenuous activities, especially during hot weather, or just prolonged heat exposure. Older folks get this much easier/faster. In mild cases, resting, plenty of fluids, and keep cool will do fine. More severe case may need hospital care. If his tempt is high...103 or more and having symptoms..Dizziness/headaches/vomitting..Then er.
