Herpes or Behcet's: Genital ulcers can be caused by the herpes virus or one of several other sexually transmitted infections.  In the us, herpes is the most common and can infect both the mouth and genitals.  Behcet's disease can also cause oral and genital ulcers.  You should be seen by a physician or an std clinic.

Unknown: We really don't know why canker sores develop.  They do seem to be related to stress in combination with some irritation to the mucous membranes of the mouth.  This can be from an accidental scratch with toothbrush, hard food, sharp tooth, etc.

Canker sores: Canker sores are most likely caused by a virus that lays dormant within your body.  During times of stress the virus can cause one of these sores.  Also, toothpastes and mouthwashes that contail sls, or sodium lauryl sulfate, can increase the incidence of sores in those who have had them before.  Finding oral hygiene products without sls will help decrease the incidence of canker sores.

Canker sores: are not pleasant and can be very painful. Canker sore is the most common oral lesions. Individual ulcers typically last 1-2 weeks. The condition is idiopathic (the cause is not known) and recurrent aphthous ulcers are usually self-limiting. Your dentist may prescribe an antimicrobial mouth rinse corticosteroid ointment to control the pain and irritation.

Canker Sores: The exact cause of most canker sores is unknown. Stress or tissue injury is thought to be the cause of simple canker sores. Certain foods -- including citrus or acidic fruits and vegetables (such as lemons, oranges, pineapples, apples, figs, tomatoes, and strawberries) - can trigger a canker sore or make the problem worse. It usually resolves in a week or 2 but minimizing irritation can help.

Not Sure: We know of several things that can cause canker sores(vitamin deficiency emotional stress, smoking, sls {sodium lauryl sulfate in most toothpastes},   as well as other illnesses(mostly autoimmune disorders).  They do not seem to be caused by bacteria or virus but can also be an allergy to a common bacterium has been reported. Tissue trauma also can be a cause.

: Studies show steroids can speed up healing and help with pain from canker sores. Options include triamcinolone acetonide 0.1% paste, clobetasol 0.05% gel or ointment, and fluocinonide gel. In the US, these are prescribed medications, not over the counter products. Good luck.

They usually : Resolve without intervention. If you have a large # of lesions please see a dentist. If you have a canker sore ( aphthous ulcer) you can rinse your mouth w warm salt water. Mix a teaspoon of salt in 8 oz of warm water – gargle w this several times a day. Another option is to swish a mix of 1 part milk of magnesia ; 1 part liquid Benadryl (diphenhydramine) in your mouth. Spit out after about a minute. Avoid eating &gt;.

Accepted Answer

Depends: If they occur often you might want to see if avoiding certain chemicals may decrease the amount of them.  A non- sls (sodium lauryl sulphate) toothpaste has helped many of my patients.  Avoiding harsh mouthwashes such as the original listenine has helped others.   If over the counter products don't give you relief you may discuss a medication with you dentist like a kenolog / steroid combination.
