a 3 week old breast feeding infant. does this baby need extra water from a bottle if constipated? does this baby need to take water from a bottle?

Breast : Breast milk provides everything a baby needs in the first 6 months to a year of life.  Babies do not need extra water.  In fact, young babies' kidneys are immature and cannot regulate the blood's sodium levels appropriately if given too much of anything besides breast milk or formula.  Giving too much water can actually lead to seizures.  If your baby is constipated, there are a few things you can do.

1.) give pear or prune juice - 1oz/age in months/day so in your case, no more than 1 oz per day. Not only does prune or pear juice have sugar which can help soften bms, but also has fiber (notice the gritty texture when you drink it?). This does not mean that you should be feeding your baby juice as a part of his regular diet, but it's ok in daily small amounts to treat constipation.

2.) if juice does not work, then you can try a glycerine suppository which you can buy over the counter. Just cut a pea-sized piece of the glycerine and place it in the baby's anus to lubricate the hard stool. This is not meant for daily use, so if you find that your baby needs a suppository in order to have a bm despite dietary changes, discuss with your child's doctor.

3.) do not use mineral oil, laxatives or enemas. These methods are not safe for infants.

4.) finally, if constipation is persistent and not improved with any of the above recommendations, be sure to contact your baby's doctor. There are some very rare underlying disorders such as hirschprung's disease, cystic fibrosis or hypothyroidism that can cause chronic constipation.

is it safe to give my 5 months baby some solids? i gave her some apple puree and she is on both breast feeding and formula(nan) but solids caused constipation. what can i do to help her? can i give her 5ml water per meal?

Safe or advised ?: Many infants grew up with early (weeks) solid feeds decades ago when families didn't breast feed &amp; made their own formula. Today with breast feeding &amp; balanced formulas we prefer to wait until they sit &amp; the tongue thrust fades ~ 6 mo. BM or formula has all the fluid they need.

my baby is really fussy and hasn't had a bm in 4 days. i am breast feeding, could this be constipation and how do if relieve it?

Constipation?: I did not get how old the baby is. A breastfed baby less than 2-3 month can go 3-5 days without a BM but the last BM being soft does not have constipation. If he/she strains a lot, passes hard or firm BM's that infrequently, then it is constipation. The fussy baby could also be hungry, so make sure you have enough breast milk. If the fussiness continues see the pediatrician to sort things out.

Breast fed kids: Breast fed infants can stool a little every feed or overflow a diaper once a week. If it is soft when they go it is not constipation. If stools are getting hard, i often try full strength prune juice, 1oz once or more/d.Takes about 3d to get things moving. Solids like applesauce, rice cereal or bananas often slow things down & constipate a baby. Peaces, pears, & barley are less constipating.

Eat healthfully!: Constipation is infrequent hard stools.  Many breast fed babies have infrequent loose stools which are normal.  Unless your baby has infrequent hard stools and is uncomfortable, no need for any special foods in your diet.  Some food such as broccoli may cause your baby to be gassy.  But infrequent stools that are not hard may be normal for your baby! eat a heathy diet with lots of fluids!

is it safe to take senna tablets during breast feeding? my baby is just one month old and iam suffering from constipation due to pain killers....

Narcotic pain: relievers can get into breast milk and affect the baby. You can increase fluids and fiber and stop the narcotic pain relievers to help the constipation.

Some basics: Babies have relatively weak belly muscles &amp; often use their fussing muscle (diaphragm) to help propel food along the digestive tract or to poop it out. Some are more fussy than others but this fades as they get older &amp; stronger. Dairy can increase this for some but not all. Constipation is dry/thick poop, not just skipping days. If it is soft it is not constipation.
