Lunesta (eszopiclone): Lunesta (eszopiclone) is by far the safest of the three.  Ambien causes too much sleep-eating, sleep-walking, sleep talking, and even sleep driving. I have not seen any of this with lunesta (eszopiclone). Silenor is horrifically expensive for an old generic drug in low doses and is probably the closest in effect to benadryl. I don't know of anyone that  has switched into mania on it, but it is a theoretical possibility.

There really isn't 1: Best sleep medicine for bipolar disorder. There are many medications that drs use to treat sleep such as zolpidem (ambien or Ambien cr), Eszopiclone (lunesta), Ramelteon (rozerem), zaleplon (sonata), silenor (doxepine), antidpressants ; benzodiazapines. Antidepressants would not be on the top of  my list to give with  bipolar  disorder. Your dr/ psychiatrist can help determine the best med for you.

No : Not advisable to take 2 medications that work on the same receptors.  Talk to your doctor about switching medications (or changing/titration the overall dose).  Hope that helps!

Bipolar: Untreated bipolar disorder can be very disruptive to your life.  You can spend money you do not have, get involved in dangerous activities, can be suicidally depressed, psychotic, and can harm your relationships at work and at home.  Episodes can be unpredictable.  This is why it's dangerous not to take mood stabilizing medicines for bipolar disorder.

Avoid if possible: There is not enough info to determine the safety of Ambien (zolpidem) during pregnancy. Some data suggest that it can cross the placenta and affect the fetus. It would be better to try good sleep hygiene like going to bed at the same time each night, avoiding heavy meals less than 2 hrs before sleep, avoiding caffeine and stressful activities at night ; engaging in relaxing activities prior to sleep.

'breakdown' is a: Broad term. When a person is very depressed or manic then they are not in good shape. When a person is manic or hypomanic they may exhibit  aggression, agitation, lack of judgment ; impulse control, distractability, rapid thoughts  ; speech, ^ libido, v sleep, spending sprees, high risk behaviors, elation, ^ physical activity ; even psychosis.When depressed one may experience low mood, v energy.

What Meds?: A lot of times it depends on the type of medication that a patient is on. Of course that increases their risk of relapse significantly, since most people with bipolar disorder need maintenance treatment with medications.

Several choices: Lithium, depakote, Lamictal & tegretol are used. Lithium requires frequent lab tests & Lamictal needs to be watched for a potentially serious rash.  Antipsychotics such as seroquel (quetiapine) are sometime used. Benzo's  are used for short periods to help with anxiety & agitation. Bipolar ll often recurs, so long term medication may be required. Learn about triggers, such as stress and lack of sleep!

Testing/self-care 4u: Manage your own stress by taking  care of your own needs. Probably, have a psychological testing done on your kid to confirm/disprove diagnosis.Testing will also show child's strength and things to work on, but knowing strengths will help you in coping with his illness and take your care for him in more positive direction. Testing can be done by a clinical psychologist specializing in children.
