Several choices: Lithium, depakote, Lamictal & tegretol are used. Lithium requires frequent lab tests & Lamictal needs to be watched for a potentially serious rash. Antipsychotics such as seroquel (quetiapine) are sometime used. Benzo's are used for short periods to help with anxiety & agitation. Bipolar ll often recurs, so long term medication may be required. Treatment of bipolar: BP ii is commonly underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Making an early and accurate diagnosis of BP ii is utmost importance in the management of BP ii disorder. The clinician should have this diagnosis in mind when he is facing a patient presenting with mood problems, particularly unipolar depression. Quetiapine and Lamotrigine are the only agents with demonstrated efficacy in double-blind studies.
