66 hrs ago i fell & injured back. xray shows possible hairline fractures in 2 lumbar vertebrae but inconclusive. mri scheduled. how long can i go w/out bowel movement or sensation of needing one before i should start to worry about neurogenic bowel?

: A modest proposal:  why not ask your current physicians if there is any evidence on your clinical exam of either spinal cord or cauda equina damage?  Your constipation may well be secondary to analgesics if you have been provided opioids.

~8 wks.: Transverse process fractures of vertebrae take 8 wks and occ. Longer to heal. As long as there is no other fractures in the vertebrae( and these are commonly isolated fxs) than they routinely heal uneventfully and w/ minimal treatment( bracing/ pain med). See your md; these fractures are sometimes associated w/ internal organ injuries when signifigant trauma is involved. Gl!

Not at age 25: Compression fractures occur most commonly in post menopausal women with osteoporosis.  Weight lifting increases bone strength it does not reduce it.  In the absence of some rare disease or genetic problem that may weaken bones a compression fracture is highly unlikely.

after my last deployment; i came home with chronic lower back pain. the pain has now progressed to my hips and down my legs. i have been told i have spinalbifia, and recently a old fracture was found in my spine around my l3, l4, l5 area while doing xrays

This could be a ...: You may be describing a spondylolysis ( a type of stress fracture or defect) which can lead to chronic lower back pain that can produce pain into the legs & has a higher association with the presence of a spinal bifida occulta.    Treatment is aggressive exercise: core strenghtening & flexibility  as well as cardiovascular routines along with use of medication with activity modification.

had first dose of prolia when they had found old fractures after persistent lower back pain. is it not advisable to have cortisone injection for pain? it was offered before osteoporosis was diagnosed and now no doctor is ordering it for me?

Cortisone osteoporos: Cortisone wastes (eats up) bone which you do not want over long haul.  But for short term may help some things.  Discuss with your team.

Get the imaging: You need to have an orthopedic doctor check you with imaging study like an MRI to define fracture. In most such non displaced and uncomplicated cases no casting or brace is required except for conservative supportive care with rest and pain meds. You should follow up to make sure it heals at expected time, and only gradually increase your activities to avoid repeat episodes and promote healing

They both can feel : The same and can occur with the same type of injury mechanism but a fracture is a bone injury and a strain is a soft tissue or muscular injury.  Occasionally, a stress fracture may require surgery while a lumbar strain always heals without any surgery.

what is the best treatment for a compression fracture to lumbar vertebrae?

Accepted Answer

Time: Compression fractures are very painful and time is the usual treatment.  Pain medications and back braces also help.  If the fracture is severe there are specialists who do procedures called 'vertebroplasty' where bone cement is injected into the vertebra surgically.  It is very important to treat the underlying osteoporosis as well.
