Generally croup is an illness of childhood.There is one fixed area in the airway called the subglottis. Kids get croup because this area is small and when is swells in reponse to inflammation/infection, the area becomes more narrow. If you have a persisent barky cough, see a physician.

Several different viruses can trigger the process & a rare asthma like spasmotic croup occurs in some. Discuss your situation with your dr. Recurrence doesn't mean bad lungs/immunity.

Croup: See a doctor and ask him for a prescription for 10 tablets of 5 mg prednisone.  take 4 Tablets day 1,3tabs day 2, 2 tablets day ,and one tablet day four.Hot showers as well aaa vaporizer or humidifier are also helpful

Older kids or adults tend to have cold like symptoms or laryngitis if they get the germ. If a person has been infected by that virus strain before they would be immune.

Yes and no: Croup is more an infection of kids 6m to 6 yrs although I have seen it in 8 yo. It involves a rubbery quality of the airway that creates the croup sound. This fades as kids age, the airway becoming more stiff.The germ more often causes laryngitis in older kids and adults.

Parainfluenza virus: Usually true 'croup' is caused by parainfluenza b virus. This is usually self limiting disease which causes inflammation of the voice box and treated by cool steam and in severe cases by corticosteroid injection. Differential diagnosis is more important, cause it might be mistaken with epiglotitis which is life threatening and caused by bacteria.
