Cost: General the adage, "You get what you pay for" applies.  A box of Tide may vary ing price from one market to another, but the product remains the same.  A crown/filling/veneer, braces, extraction, etc. is a service, not a commodity.  Success, function, esthetics, longevity, depend on the training, skill, and experience of the provider.  In the long run it's better to seek quality treatment.

Symptoms: Your symptoms are indicative of inflammation and/infection. The best practitioner to treat your son is the one that knows him best, the one that did the extraction. Brush area gently but thoroughly twice a day. Imperative that adjacent teeth be flossed every day. If soreness increases, or if your son runs a fever, seek local help immediately.

It : It is most definately better to have a specialist look at it. Most general dentists are not equiped to handle these difficult cases. Most won't even think about doing a retreat on a molar. My endodontists have microscopes to help do the rct much more efficiently.
As the tooth is treated with redone rct and apical surgeries, the success rate drops. Success rates for intial rcts are in the mid to high 90%. Retreats drop down into the high 80%.

Only : Only by clinical exam and an x-ray will you get the true answer to your question.  Back teeth in general need some support after root canals to prevent fracture-not so for front teeth unless there are other factors such as appearance or weakened tooth structure.  If you're not sure get a second opinion.

See prior answers ++: One of three reasons: (1) first dentist got into a problem that became beyond his expertise, and referred to his partner, who has more experience and expertise about the problem at hand (most likely; give them the benefit of the doubt). (2)  this is a routine way of approaching root canal problems in that practice, and perhaps it wasn't and redo, but next stage. (3) $ (less likely.

Nothing to worry: Since the nerve of the tooth has been removed already and tooth is non-vital, you won't feel any pain. The only extra step in this procedure is removing old root canal filling.  As far as you're concerned, it shouldn't be any different than when you had it done the first time and antibiotics usually are not needed. Good luck.

Usually comfortable: Root canals are usually comfortable.  Your dentist will use a very strong anesthetic to prevent you from feeling most of the procedure.  If the tooth has an infection it can be a little uncomfortable when your dentist initially gets into the pulp chamber where the nerve lives.  The anesthetic today is much better than it was 20 years ago where most of the stories come from!  Best of luck!

Cleansing: The center of he tooth s hollow, filled with soft sterile tissue in health.  Infected, and diseased tissue must be removed.  Root canal treatment cleans out the space, resterilizes the hollow and seals it from inside.  To protect he tooth, it must be properly restored adhesively.
